Flashback
A young Klaus comforts a young Rebekah, who is lying in bed terrified of a storm. She asks if he’ll protect her until the storm ends and Klaus assures her that he’ll always be there to watch over her.
Present day
In the graveyard, Klaus advances on Rebekah. However, Elijah intervenes and tells her to get out of sight. He pleads with Klaus to end this now, but if he doesn’t then he will defend his sister for as long as it takes and by whatever means necessary.
Rebekah calls Marcel the following morning with an update. Klaus still refuses to the stand down. Marcel assures her that Davina will be able to find a loophole to counteract Celeste’s spell that has entrapped them in the graveyard.
Davina isn’t doing so well. While three out of the four witches from the sacrificial harvest have come back from the dead with happy memories from their time with the ancestors, Davina refuses to talk about what she experienced and begs Marcel not to make her relive it.
Flashback
A young Elijah is teaching a young Klaus to hunt with a bow and arrow. He misses his mark, which results in Mikael beating him for not doing it correctly.
Present day
Elijah tells Klaus to be a better man than their father was. Klaus insists that his violence is justified by betrayal whereas Mikael did it for no reason. Rebekah steps forward, asking permission to prove how it was his cruelty that led her to do what she did. Klaus agrees to hear her out.
Cami goes to visit Davina and gets her to open up about her time in the afterlife. She reveals that the ancestors are angry with her for using her powers against fellow witches for Marcel. They promised to do horrible things to Davina if she misused her magic ever again.
Rebekah explains how Klaus has always denied her the freedom to love who she wants. He suggests that Marcel simply manipulated her to take New Orleans for himself. Tempers rise and Rebekah admits that she’d do it all again. He goes to attack her, but Elijah stops him and even gets the white oak stake in the process.
Davina questions whether she can really trust Marcel or not, knowing that he hopes to use her magic to save Rebekah, just like Cami wants her help in saving her uncle from the hex. But even if she wanted to help, she knows the witches hate her too much to assist. Marcel overhears this and relays the news to Rebekah. She tells him to run while he still can.
Elijah reveals to Klaus how he caught her attempting to kill their father when they were younger. She would’ve done it if he hadn’t stopped her—just to protect Klaus. Elijah throws the white oak stake to the ground to prove that he doesn’t want to fight. Klaus responds by plunging the witches’ dagger into Elijah’s heart. Rebekah then grabs the abandoned white oak stake and says now she gets to decide who lives or dies.
Marcel goes to visit Genevieve, who offers him a deal. She’ll help lift the graveyard spell if he hands over Davina. She promises that she just wants to help her and will keep her safe. He agrees, but threatens to retaliate if any harm comes to Davina.
With Elijah out of the way, Klaus zeroes in on Rebekah and tries to get her to admit that she’d wanted Mikael to kill him rather than just make him run away. After some coaxing, she confesses that part of her may have wanted that. Angry and hurt, Klaus stabs her with the white oak stake.
By nightfall, Rebekah awakens and realizes that Klaus had purposefully missed stabbing her in the heart. He tells her he just wanted her to feel a fraction of the fear he did when their father returned. Klaus pulls the dagger out of Elijah and gives Rebekah his blessing to leave New Orleans to be free. However, he warns that Rebekah can never come back.
Klaus returns to the Quarter to find Marcel waiting for him, but Klaus has nothing to say to him. Instead, Elijah appears and throws him against the wall. He will allow Marcel to live for his sister’s sake, but informs him that he is now exiled from the city and can never return.
Rebekah and Marcel meet up, but he’s decided that he can’t go with her. Her brothers have taken everything from him and he can’t let them get away with it. Rebekah is disappointed but not surprised. After saying one final goodbye to Marcel, Elijah, and Hayley, Rebekah drives off into unknown, smiling over her newfound freedom.
