Soap gives a glimpse of two families struggling through the typical soap opera fare...divorce, infidelity, homosexuality, alien abduction, demon possession - but Soap is a brilliant parody of the classic nighttime dramas of the late 1970's.

Jessica Tate is the heart of the show. She's the sweet, funny, full-of-life matriarch of the family who holds them all together. You can't help but root for Jessica even though she seems a bit, well, stupid. Her sister Mary, while more intelligent, is the sensible yet neurotic one. Their husbands and children provide the conflicts and comedy in their lives.

The best part of the show, other than Benson the Butler, is a young Billy Crystal as Jodie Dallas, Mary's gay son. Even then, it was evident that Crystal would be a comedic talent.

This show will appeal to those who enjoyed movies like "Airplane!" and "Naked Gun". It is the same brand of silly, in-your-face humor. I just recently bought the first two seasons on DVD. I was afraid it would feel "dated". It did, but in a good way - in the way "That 70's Show" is trying to emulate.
