Episode Recap

At A.N.D. Laboratories, Wendy Watson is working as a temp secretary and trying to convince her mother it’s a prestigious position. As she plays with her dead father’s Zippo lighter, she’s unaware that an accident in a laboratory has unleashed a genetic limb-monster. It grabs her and as she drops the lighter, she tries to stab it, and a handsome man shows up with a really big gun and shoots it. He asks Wendy to step aside and then tasers the creature, blowing it up. He tells her that he was never there and she has to keep his secret or he’ll kill her. When she says she will, he confirms she’s telling the truth with a wristwatch device and quickly departs as the emergency squads arrive, but not before saying he’s a Middleman.

At an Italian restaurant, mobsters try to figure out who ordered hits on a rival mob. They’re interrupted when a shadowy figure arrives and guns all of them but one down.

Back at the temp agency, Wendy discovers that she’s being blamed for the explosion because of the lighter and they can’t place her until she’s cleared. She considers telling the truth but remembers what the Middleman said. Wendy ends up trying to find work without success. After chatting briefly with Noser, a neighbor, she returns to her sublet loft and chats with her roommate Lacey, an animal activist, and then gets a call that a new temp agency wants to hire her. She goes there and meets with the supervisor, Ida, who administers a series of stringent physical and mental tests. When they’re done, the Middleman comes in and says the agency is a front for the organization he runs, and he contracts out his services to defeat mad scientists and evil villains. He has Ida demonstrate she’s an android, and when Wendy doesn’t panic he notes that she has a low scare threshold and skill with video games. He calls in Sensei Ping to give her martial arts training and explains that he framed her for the explosion so they could hire her.

Furious, Wendy stalks off and goes back to her loft where her boyfriend Ben Stanley is waiting for her. However, he has a camera and a cameraman with him, and says that his professor insists he should have more pain in his life. So Ben breaks up with her and she responds by giving him some real pain and chasing him out. She then goes berserk with her art, painting the creature from the lab.

The Middleman arrives at the Italian restaurant and begins a scan, only for Wendy to arrive and claim to be a fellow agent. She admits she has no job options and he agrees to take her on.

The witness at the restaurant, who managed to survive the hit, is pulled over by other mobsters who want to know what he saw. Before he can say, a banana drops from the sky and the same shadowy figure guns them all down.

Wendy and the Middleman get the banana and have Ida scan it, and they determine it could only have come from Simionics Animal Laboratories. They go there and meet with Dr. Gibbs, the head scientist. They pretend to be sewer inspectors and meet her genetically augmented super-smart gorillas who speak using voice synthesizers. They notice one empty cell, which Gibbs says used to contain Spanky, one of their failed experiments. Wendy notices a secret compartment which leads to a room filled with Mafia memorabilia and bananas. Gibbs talks about how he failed in their space shuttle pilot program, but the duo don’t buy it.

The Middleman cranks up some country music and goes to the Andolini Social Club, a meeting place for mobsters. He insists on going in on his own and has Wendy hold all of his equipment. He goes inside, Wendy hears some noises, and the mobsters come running out. The Middleman has Tino, who runs all the rackets in town and is in good with the new boss. The Middleman explains to Wendy that he was a Navy SEAL trained in causing pain and demonstrates on Tino. Tino directs them to a strip club and they head over there where Spanky is on the phone running his new business. Spanky makes a break for it, strips off his clothing and his voice synthesizer, and escapes over a fence and into the nearby zoo where he blends in with the other gorillas.

The Middleman drops Wendy off at her sublet and warns her to be careful. As she goes in and runs into Noser, she spots a banana in the hallway. She takes his guitar, sounds the alarm, runs in… and smashes Ben in the head. He’s come to apologize and they have a tender moment until the Middleman bursts in. Lacey tries to hit on him but Wendy interrupts them and gets both men outside… where Spanky opens fire. They duck back into the apartment and regroup, and the Middleman goes after Spanky. Spanky has a new voice box and they figure Dr. Gibbs is involved.

The Middleman heads for Simionics and Wendy insists on going to the lab. They rappel in, unaware until it’s too late that one Spanky is cutting through Wendy’s line. She drops to the ground and Spanky holds a gun on her while Gibbs comes in. She explains that she’s been controlling all the gorillas through the master computer and forces the Middleman to give up his gun. She explains that she’s taking over the Mob to finance her experiments. He threatens her with an explosive and she doesn’t give in. However, when she has Spanky open fire, the Middleman drops down on his line, grabs the gun, and takes Gibbs prisoner. He plans to turn Gibbs over to the authorities but Wendy wonders what to do with the gorillas. She comes up with a plan and has Lacey’s animal activist friends arrange for the gorillas to be returned to the wild. Wendy insists she won’t be held hostage again, and the Middleman notes he’ll tie her to the car if he has to. Finally, he gives her back her father’s Zippo before driving off.

Back at her sublet, Wendy starts painting again and tells her mother (vaguely) about her new job.
