Episode Recap

Grady Edlund and three of the hands have taken off into the mountains ten days ago and haven't been seen since. Grady's older son Derek is getting ready to ride out, telling his younger brother Tim he'll be fine. Their uncle Rowdy disagrees, pointing out the weather on the mountain is bad. Derek accuses Rowdy of not caring and Rowdy prepares to ride out himself despite a bad leg. He goes to tell his sister-in-law, Helena, that he's leaving to search for husband, and complains about how Grady has never kept the place up. As they talk, a figure staggers out of the woods: Grady, skeletally thin and frostbitten.

Rowdy and the remaining ranch hand, Eddie Bear, get Grady inside and call Dr. Morgan. While Derek reassures Tim, Morgan says that Grady will recover but wonders what he ate to stay alive. As Morgan leaves, he says that Grady did say one thing: that he's hungry.

Rowdy tries to reassure Derek, who is angry that Grady had to buy the ranch from Rowdy when he injured his leg just to keep the place going. Derek also accuses Rowdy of having an affair with his mother and slugs his uncle. Rowdy takes it and tells him to back off, but Derek accuses him of wanting Grady dead. Derek and Rowdy go inside and while Derek takes a meal up to his father, Helena admits that Grady has changed somehow. They hear a crash upstairs and go up to find that Grady has deliberately spilled the food on the floor. Helena stays to make her husband comfortable and he licks her arm, saying that she "tasted good."

That night, Rowdy hears the horses whinnying outside and goes outside with Eddie to see that one of the mares has been ripped open by some kind of animal. As they examine the corpse, Eddie looks up and sees Grady in the window, watching them.

The next day, Rowdy tries to get the sheriff to investigate. Eddie goes to talk to Grady by himself. He draws a knife and moves in on Grady, saying that his uncle was lost in the mountains when Eddie was a boy. When the uncle came back, he was skeletal-looking and killed his family. Eddie tells Grady that something has gotten into him and he has to let it go. Grady just smirks and says it's too late, and that nobody will believe Eddie's story if he kills him. Eddie has no choice but to back down for the time being.

Eddie talks to Rowdy, explaining that Grady has been possessed by the Wendigo. The Wendigo is an evil spirit that lives in the mountain, and preys on men filled with hate when they're weak and starving. Eddie's uncle hated the white man and opened his heart to the Wendigo, and came back to kill animals and people until the sheriff gunned him down.

Helena looks in on Grady, who finally explains that he and the other three men holed up in a cave during a storm. After two of them left to get help, Grady grew weak with hunger and killed the other injured man. Helena realizes that Grady is dangerous and tries to get out of the room, but Grady grabs her. Rowdy comes in with a rifle and tells him to release Helena. Grady does so and then howls and slips out of the room at lightning speed.

Helena and Rowdy get the boys out of the house, where Eddie is waiting with an axe. Helena takes the boys to the trailer while Eddie and Rowdy split up to corner Grady. Eddie goes upstairs and Grady ambushes him with the same lightning speed.

A little later, Rowdy goes to the trailer to let Helena and the boys know that Eddie and Grady have both vanished. Derek and Tim insist that their father is just sick, and Rowdy shouldn't shoot him. Rowdy gives Helena his gun and goes into the house to the gun cabinet. He arms himself and goes upstairs where he finds Eddie as he lies dying. Grady is back in his bed, claiming he's too sick to get up. He asks Rowdy for help but when Rowdy says he doesn't know how, Grady turns on him, saying Grady wants to get rid of him so he can have Helena and get the ranch back. Rowdy sees a picture and remembers the two of them as boys, then prepares to shoot Grady, who lunges at him…

Helena hears rowdy's screams and gets the boys to the barn. She has them hide as Grady comes to the barn door and tells her to put the gun down. She finally gives in and he shows her Rowdy's corpse, then hauls it and her to the kitchen. He tosses Rowdy's corpse on the table and tells her to make a stew out of it. She tries to get through to her husband, telling him to turn out the spirit that he let in. The possessed Grady just laughs at her then slaps her to the ground. She sees Derek heading for the gun cabinet and starts cutting up Rowdy to distract the Wendigo. Derek gets to Rowdy's coat and takes the key for the gun cabinet.

The Wendigo pours out two bowls of stew and tells Helena to eat one of them. She does so, to keep the Wendigo from noting Derek. The Wendigo talks of how Grady was angry with Rowdy and Helena, blaming them for his giving in. Helena, having enough, hits him with her bowl and Derek comes in and shoots the Wendigo. It flees outside, smashing Helena into a cabinet where she cuts her wrist on the glass. Derek chooses to stay and bandage her wound before she bleeds to death.

The Wendigo goes to the barn and captures Tim. Derek arrives and tells him to drop his brother, calling the Wendigo "Daddy." The Wendigo sneers and says that he isn't Derek's daddy. Tim distracts him by biting off his ear. He drops to the ground and Derek shoots the Wendigo. They get outside and Derek tells Tim to go to the car. Tim refuses and Derek explains that Rowdy isn't their uncle: he's their father. The Wendigo, wounded but still alive, grabs Derek and prepares to rip him apart. Helena arrives and tells it to get its hands off of her son, and then shoots the creature dead.
