Happy Little Show
Despite how it seems, The Joy of Painting is not a show for beginning painters. Bob Ross, who hosted the show before his untimely death, says that anyone can paint, and that may be true. But not ANYONE can paint like Bob does, and certainly not in 25 minutes.

Bob Ross is everyone's favorite frizzy-haired, old hippie teacher. He's so mellow and goofy, you can't help but love his laid-back style. "You decide how many trees live in your world" says Bob. "Just let that brush float around and make happy little clouds". Now THIS is a guy who makes you want to give painting a try.

But when you do try it, you have to use the "Bob Ross brand" paint, especially the Magic White (which is not one of his hippie terms - it's the slick white paint he coats his canvases with before he begins) or your work will look nothing like Bob's. He makes it look easy, but if you try to paint with him, you may find you need to practice some of his strokes first on some scratch paper.

The Joy of Painting is fun, with some good tips. But if you are a new painter, I would advise getting a few preliminary lessons first, or Bob's techniques may be too much and too fast for you. However, I still recommend the show for pure entertainment, and for inspiration.
