» What Halloween means to me
Mood: sore
We are just about a month away from one of my most favoritest times of year...HALLOWEEN! And while, no doubt, I'll be posting another blog before then I wanted to use this second to last blog to muse on what the season means to me...

Ghosts, ghouls and "happy haunts"...

When I think of Halloween I think of ghosts. Ghost stories, movies, songs and of course Disney's Haunted Mansion! I've always loved it, but after visiting again back in March it's been in the forefront of my mind, especially now with 10/31 fast approaching!

This is also a good time for me to start listening to a couple old recordings I found of Vincent Price reading spooky stories, "A Horn Book For Witches" and "A Graveyard Of Ghost Tales".

Ah...Vincent Price...what would Halloween be without hearing him tell me how I can see ghosts (or surely bring them to me), watching "The Abominable Dr. Phibes", listening to his "rap" in Michael Jackson's "Thriller", or watching Tim Burton's cute homage to him "Vincent"?

And Tim Burton? "Sleepy Hollow", "Edward Scissorhands", "Beetle Juice" and of course "A Nightmare Before Christmas" (which I find just as appropriate for viewing at Halloween as I do at Christmas)

Which makes me think of music! I just recently downloaded the Marilyn Manson version of "This Is Halloween" from "A Nightmare Before Christmas", and I'm putting together, as I do every year, a new mix of mood setting songs including (but not limited to)...

"Ghost Town" - The Specials
"Welcome To My Nightmare" - Alice Cooper
"Haunted House" - Jumpin' Gene Simmons
"Skulls" - Misfits
"No Costume, No Candy" - Swingin' Neckbreakers

And what would Halloween be without candy? It's time to make several pilgrimages to various stores to search the candy isles! Candy corn is a staple...but this year I've already spotted several "gourmet" varieties like assorted fruits, toffee, and caramel apple to name a few. What I haven't seen yet, though am always on the look out for is "Mr. Bones"...one of my favorites as a kid! It's like these little smarties/sweet tarts-like candy bones that you can connect to make a candy skeleton...Mr. Bones...in a colorful plastic coffin.

I'm also trying to plan my annual Halloween movie marathon. I like to either set a theme (zombies: "Shaun Of The Dead", "Night Of The Living Dead", "White Zombie", "Return Of The Living Dead"...) or go with an established series...last year it was Full Moon Productions "Puppet Master" movies, and a few years ago it was Universal's Frankenstein films of the 30's & 40's. A couple weeks ago I figured there was no reason to wait and started the season with a mini marathon...I watched "Munster Go Home", "Munster's Revenge" and "Munster's Scary Little Christmas".

So...not sure if this ended up being a blog about what Halloween means to me, or just a blog about what I like about it, or what I think about when I think about it...but there it is...

Last chance to take the quiz...tomorrow's the last blog in this bunch

Halloween candy is the greatest invention ever in time. I remember one year when I was probably 8 or 9 among the standard Old Lady Candies, mints, dental floss (an insult to children on Halloween night nationwide!), and chocolates, I got one Mr. Bones and it was so great. The elusive search continues for him, but sightings of him are few and far between.

There's a local record store that has a bunch of monster movie classics that I might check out or at least look at to get some ideas.

"Nosferatu" by Blue Öyster Cult and "Vampires Will Never Hurt You" are pretty good songs too. "Spieluhr" by Rammstein, while less Halloween-oriented, is still delightfully creepy, especially the intro and bridge. Video and pretty good translation here.

Cool! And how could I have forgotten MCR? "Vampires Will Never Hurt You", "Cemetery Drive", "Early Sunsets Over Monroeville", "Dead"...even "Helena" (especially the video) all have a place in my Halloween music mix!

LOL yeah, lots of good stuff from them. Their video for "Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough for the Two of Us" is based on the Japanese horror movie Audition.

Speaking of music videos that seem like movies, the Out Here All Night music video (linked the song in another blog here, but I don't think I linked to the video) kind of has an old horror movie feel to it. EMBEDDING DISABLED BY REQUEST
