Sarah Michelle Gellar was born on April 14, 1977 in New York, New York; to parents: Arthur and Rosellen. When Sarah was just 4 years of age, she was discovered by an agent and would soon rise to become a huge star.
At first she only got commercial ads and a few small movie roles, but her major break came in 1992 when she landed the role of Sydney Rutledge on the teen soap opera,
Swans Crossing. After the show's sudden cancellation, Sarah got cast on the long-running soap opera
All My Children, where she played the conniving character Kendall Hart, the long-lost daughter of character Erica Kane (played by Susan Lucci). In 1995, at the age of 18, she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Leading Actress in a Drama Series.
When Sarah left
All My Children in 1995, it was a while before she got cast in the lead role of Buffy Summers in the new WB TV series,
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This role didn't seem like much, since the show was based on the failed 1992 film of the same name, starring
Kristy Swanson and because it was on a new unknown network, The WB. The show surprised everybody as it became a massive cult classic and lasted for 7 years. It even earned her a Golden Globe nomination in 2001 for Best Actress in a Drama Series. Sarah Michelle Gellar, soon a household name, started nabbing movie offers left and right as she starred in numerous films such as
I Know What You Did Last Summer,
Cruel Intentions,
The Grudge,
Scream 2 and
Scooby Doo. On September 1, 2002, Gellar and teen-movie actor
Freddie Prinze Jr. were married in Mexico.
