Rolling Stone has described the sound of My Chemical Romance to be something like “ Queen meets The Misfits.” While these are bands which the band has cited as influences, it is often hard to describe the type of music My Chemical Romance plays. The members of the band were greatly influenced by comic books and horror flicks through childhood, which can be detected through the music they play.
The first song by My Chemical Romance, titled “Skylines and Turnstiles,” was written by Gerard Way on his feelings on September 11th. The band was formed originally by ex-drummer Matt Pelissier and Gerard, and later Mikey Way, Gerard’s brother, Ray Toro, and Frank Iero would join. The band would record their first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, after being established for nearly three months. Guitarist Frank Iero had been a member merely days before they first visited the studio to record. The album was released on Eyeball Records, and the band went on tour with other groups such as The Used and Taking Back Sunday.
In 2003, My Chemical Romance signed with Reprise Records, and released their sophomore album the next year. At the beginning of 2005, MCR was featured on the Taste of Chaos tour, and also opened for Green Day.
2006 saw the release of MCR’s first ever DVD. The DVD, titled Life on the Murder Scene, featured a video diary chronicling the history of MCR, live performances and music videos, and a CD with live performance tracks.
The band's third studio album, The Black Parade, is due to be released on October 24.
