Rob Whitehurst

Rob Whitehurst is a sound recordist/mixer for the film and television industry and started recording sounds around the age of 9, when his father, the manager of a chain of hardware stores, brought home a sample reel to reel tape recorder for him to play with. Born in Tampa, Florida, Whitehurst grew up in a family that loved music, movies and television. His first subjects to be recorded were his dog barking and his younger sister making funny noises. But it wasn't until February 9th, 1964, with the first appearance of The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show that Rob knew he had to be involved in the arts as a living. Shortly after that, he got his first guitar for his 13th birthday.

In high school, Rob formed his first rock band but also received his first professional tape deck, an RCA. With this recorder, he not only taped his own band, but other groups as well. Whitehurst attended the University of South Florida and received a degree in Speech/Broadcasting, helping out at both WUSF CH 16, and WUSF FM. In 1973, Rob got his first job in radio as a control board engineer at WKES-FM. A year later, Rob moved to WSST-AM and inherited a half hour Saturday show entitled "Changes", one of the first Christian Rock radio programs in the country. Whitehurst's next progression was to music director at WINQ-AM, known now as the pioneer commercial Christian rock radio station.

In 1978, Whitehurst left radio and entered the corporate world, eventually reaching the rank of senior vice president. But in 1985, the freelance production industry was developing in central Florida, and Rob, with his extensive recording background, was asked to do sound for a television show that was being taped locally. After five years, Whitehurst left the corporate world to work as a sound recordist for film and television.

Rob’s credits include television shows like American Idol, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, The Biggest Loser, The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, 60 Minutes, Dateline, 48 Hours, The Today Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, COPS, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, America’s Most Wanted, etc.

Whitehurst also does regular work for National Geographic Explorer, NFL Films, PBS, Major League Baseball, Nascar, etc.

His film credits include To Die For, Long Gone, Old Explorers, In The Line Of Duty: The FBI Murders, Making Waves, The Profit, Facing The Giants and IMAX films Stormchasers and The Magic Of Flight.

Rob continues to work as a production sound mixer and is based out of west central Florida.
