In 1983 while attending University of Vermont in Burlington, Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, and Jeff Holdsworth first formed the band. Soon Mike Gordon joined in as the bassist and in 1985 Page McConnell joined the group, not much later Holdsworth left the group.
