Christian rock band Relient K formed in 1997, in Canton, Ohio. Since the band formed, they have come out with catchy beats and lighthearted lyrics, but they have also been in an upward progression.
Relient K’s 1998 demo,
All Work and No Play caught the attention of the member of a fellow Christian band called dc Talk. Toby McKeehan signed the band to Gotee Records, after which they released their first EP,
2000 A. D. D. in 2000. In the same year, they released their self-titled debut album, which featured a Christian rock sound.
The next year, their sophomore album
The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek hit record stores. Like their previous album, this one also featured several cultural references, but many songs were softer and lighter than on the previous album.
While the cultural references in their third album
Two Lefts Don’t Make a Right… But Three Do dissipated, the sounds only became more strong. Keeping some songs slow as the previous album, some fast-paced, lyrically deep songs were thrown into the fray. A bonus Christmas disc was available with the CD in November and December of 2003, entitled
Deck the Halls, Bruise Your Hand.
The band’s fourth album,
Mmhmm, had very few, if any, cultural references, and the songs were much more serious than previous records. Due to the success of
Mmhmm, which was certified gold in July of 2005, the other albums the band released started to sell many more copies. 2004 also marked the release of Relient K’s book, entitled
The Complex Infrastructure Known as the Female Mind, in which the band gives advice on the opposite sex through experiences and Biblical advice, all shown in a lighthearted manner much in the same way of their music.
November 2005 marked the release of their EP,
Apathetic EP, on Capital Records. It featured six songs: three acoustic versions of previous works, and three originals.
Lead singer Matt Thiessen reports that a new full-length album is being recorded and may be released in the fall of 2006.
