Band History:
Nickelback started when Chad and Mike Kroeger decided to form a band with their cousin Brandon (no longer in the band), and their friend Ryan Peake. Mike Kroeger came up with the name Nickelback for the band because while he was working at Starbucks he would charge $1.45 for coffee. Customers would give him $1.50 so he was always forced to give them a nickel back.
They soon tired of being a cover band and sing other band's songs and decided to write their own. Chad was put in charge of writing the songs and the rest of the band was in charge of the music. After writing their songs Chad borrowed $4000 from his stepfather and went to Vancouver to record their songs at a friend's studio.
The band finished their demo CD "Hesher" and submitted it to various companies. Chad's previous expierence in advertising helped them to get their band publicity. They continued doing ameteur performances and in 1997 they released their debut album. They fired their manager in 1998 when they felt he was not helping them. In 1999 they released their second album independantly. Their hit single "Leader of Men" caught the attention of Roadrunner Records and soon they were signed. They soon released their third CD and became a large hit in the US. This success continued and soon this nobody band from Canada was playing with groups like Creed, Fuel, 3 Doors Down, and Puddle of Mud. In 2005 they released their 5th album and it was not only the band's first to be the number one in the US, but was a first for Roadrunner Records as well.
