Patrick Dempsey was born in Lewiston, Maine on January 13, 1966 and spend his childhood in the small town of Buckfield, Maine. At the age of 7, Patrick began taking dancing lessons until he was kicked out for flirting and being a disruption. By 15, Patrick had made up a routine and toured the New England Vaudeville Circuit as a magician, comedian, and unicyclist, as well as a juggler and won third place in a National Juggling Competition.
Patrick's big break came in1981 when he won a Talent America Contest. A talent agency saw his potential and had him audition for the role of David in a stage production of
Torch Song Trilogy. Patrick went on to act in several other plays including
On Golden Pond and
Brighton Beach Memoirs in which he starred.
His talent and determination continued to pay off and in 1985, Patrick made his big screen debut in the movie
Heaven Help Us. By 1987, Dempsey had achieved major star status with his role in
Can't Buy Me Love. Though the movie led to wide exposure and launched him into "teen idol" status, his moment in the spotlight was short-lived.

Outbreak, the movies in which Dempsey starred during the early 1990s were box office bombs, and it wasn't until he acted in
Scream 3 in 2000 that he was thrust back into the spotlight. Recently, Dempsey acted in the movie
Sweet Home Alabama alongside Reese Witherspoon and will star in upcoming 2007 movies
Freedom Writers and
Enchanted.
During his years in the acting business, Dempsey also made several television guest appearances including
Will and Grace,
The Practice, and
Once and Again.
Dempsey currently stars as Dr. Derek Shepherd on the hit ABC show
Grey's Anatomy.
