Richards was born in Downers Grove, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, to Irving Richards, of Welsh descent (a former phone company worker) and Joni, of Croatian descent, who owns a chain of coffeehouses named "Jitters". She has one younger sister. She grew up in the Chicago area, until the family relocated to Oceanside, California when she was fifteen. She moved to Oceanside, California with her family during her teen years, and graduated from El Camino High School, where she was a cheerleader. She began working as a model, and moved to Los Angeles after she graduated from high school.
She began to be cast in both TV and movies, and first got noticed in the film, Starship Troopers (1997) with Casper Van Dien. She followed up that movie with Wild Things (1998) and played a Bond Girl in The World Is Not Enough (1999). She also was in Undercover Brother (2002) with Eddie Griffin and appeared in Scary Movie 3 (2003) with her husband, Charlie Sheen.
