Paul is the behind the scenes partner of Crane, Poole, & Schmidt. He doesn't spend a lot of his time in the courtroom. Paul spends most of it making sure that firm is in good standing and handling damage control in case Denny is up to something. If it wasn't for his silent contributions, the firm would be more like an asylum where the inmates are in charge. We learn Paul has a daughter who is addicted to illegal substances. Paul later scales back his workload to take care of his granddaughter. Carl Sack is called in to take over Paul's day-to-day job in the firm.

Since Odo race is from the newly opened Gamma Quadrant, he is the only one of his kind in the Alpha Quadrant. Odo had been Chief of Security before DS9 had changed hands from the Cardassians to the Bajorans/Federation. He retained his position by being the best possible choice for the job. Commander Sisko allows him total control over matters of security aboard the space station. Odo has a strong sense of justice, something that he honed over the years so he would be useful to the Cardassians. He had been appointed by Gul Dukat as Chief of Security because he was seen by both the Cardassians and the Bajorans as a neutral party.
