Mark made his debut in professional wrestling as a referee and an official timekeeper in 1989. He was the official timekeeper that rang the bell so quickly during the infamous
“Montreal Screwjob” causing
Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart to lose the then WWF (now WWE) World Heavyweight Title to
‘The Heatbreak Kid’ Shawn Michaels. Other names that have been given to this event have been the
“Montreal Incident”, “Survivor Series Screwjob” and
“The Big Double Cross”.
This event was during a major annual pay-per view event called
“The Survivor Series” held live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 9 November 1997.
Earl Hebner was the official referee for the match and on orders from owner & CEO
Vincent J. McMahon Jr. calls for the bell that Mark quickly rang.
Bret Hart was originally scheduled to win this match and retain his World Heavyweight title.
Vice McMahon had received information that Bret who had just signed to wrestle in the WCW (World Championship Wrestling) was planning on taking his belt with him to his new federation and Vince did not want that to happen. The Wednesday before the scheduled Sunday Survivor Series pay-per view, Vince devised a plan with former professional wrestling great
Gerald Brisco who supposedly had gone Shawn’s hotel room to show him how to defend himself should Bret attempt to
"shoot" on him. McMahon decided along with others that included his future son-in-law
Triple H that he had no alternative other than to make sure that Survivor Series would end with Shawn as the new World Heavyweight Champion.
