Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati on December 18, 1946, and raised in the suburbs of Haddonfield New Jersey and Scottsdale Arizona. He always had a love and fascination for the movie industry, even as a pre-teen, he has charged admission to his home movies while his sister sold popcorn. By the time he was 12 years old, he had finished his first production. At the age of 13, Spielberg won a prize for a 40-minute war movie he titled
Escape to Nowhere. In 1963, his 140 minutes production of
Firelight was shown in a local movie theater and brought in $100 profit.
After being denied entrance into traditional film schools, he entered the California State University in Long Beach to study English. His professional movie career began, when he turned an abandoned janitor's closet at the back lots of the Universal Studios Hollywood into his office. It was the film
Jaws in 1975 that made him into an international superstar among his peers. Throughout the years, he has directed in many unforgettable movies such as
E.T. ,
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind,
the Indiana's sagas and many more. He has been recognized not only by the Academy Awards, but various other nominations including Golden Globe and Directors Guild awards. He is also the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute and the prestigious Irving G. Thasberg Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Personally, he credits much of his success and happiness to his wife, actress Kate Capshaw and children. The couple has a total of 7 children (2 adopted and 2 from previous marriages).
