Born in Paris on September 28, 1934, Brigitte Bardot rose to fame as a sex-symbol of the 50s and 60s. Her first film appearance was at age 18, the same year that she married director Roger Vadim. The two had been in a relationship for a few years by that time. She continued to appear in French-language movies, most of them light romatic dramas, and by the mid-50s had begun to appear in bit-parts in English movies as well. Vadim and Bardot divorced in 1957, and she married Jacques Charrier in 1959; the two had a child, Nicolas-Jaques, in 1960.
By the early 60s, Brigitte had withdrawn from public life, living in seclusion in the South of France. She announced her retirement in 1974, and since that time has become involved in animal rights causes, establishing the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals; she particularly opposes the eating of horse meat. She has also been a public supporter of the right-wing Front National party in France with her husband, Bernard d'Ormale, a politician. In 2003, Bardot came under public scrutiny when she published a book, A Scream In The Silence, in which she expressed views that were seen to be anti-Muslim and anti-gay. The book, and Bardot's views, lead to law suits and numerous findings of guilt for "inciting racial hatred"; her opinions have resulted in a loss of sympathy from her fans.
