The Stakeout

Reese is sitting in a car and listening to Finch complaining about Bear eating his books. Carter gets in with them and hands out coffee and tea, and Benny Belasco steps outside of the bar that he owns for a break. Finch reminds Carter that they've received information that HR is coming after Benny because he stole from them, and leaves to feed Bear before he eats more books. Reese turns on the radio to classic rock, and Carter asks for something else. She then says that she's still getting used to finding someone before they die instead of afterward.

Now

Fusco interrupts Reese as he daydreams, and says that they had two more Brotherhood guys shot dead. The survivor is one of Elias' men, Carlo. Reese checks with Finch and asks why the Brotherhood member's Numbers didn't come up. Finch points out that it may not have been premeditated, and Reese suspects that Elias ordered the shooting as retaliation for Dominic coming after him. Finch has received a new Number, Chase Patterson. His family was killed in 2008 and Chase fled the country before the police could charge or arrest him. Chase has returned to the country from Paris after seven years. Reese tells Finch to stay on Dominic and Elias with Fusco while he goes to Evidence and checks Chase's case file. Meanwhile, Root enters the subway station wearing a wedding dress, and explains that she tried to get close to someone with inside information on Samaritan. She admits that she failed, and Finch asks if she wants to help stop a gang war and determine if the Machine is functioning correctly.

At Evidence, the officer tells Reese that he found the case files in with the investigating officer's effects. Carter was the one looking into Chase's case.

The Stakeout

As they continue watching Benny, Carter says that the only thing worse than a stakeout is doing the paperwork. She admits that the paperwork in the military wasn't much better, and Reese says that when he was in the military he got too good at taking orders. He asks Carter if she's ever thought about doing something else, and she says that she's considering just relaxing on a beach. However, she doesn't want to take Taylor out of school because he's doing well, and he's proud of his mother.

Now

At his desk, Reese hesitantly opens the box of Carter's effects. Among them is a photo of Carter with Taylor. There's also a journal and a photo of Reese and Jessica falls out. Fusco comes in and Reese says that he's just working a cold case. The detective says that Finch and Root are handling Carlo, and jokingly tells Reese that he's a terrible cop. He notices that Reese is distracted, and Reese tells him to help Finch while he covers things. Once Fusco leaves, Reese finds the Patterson case in the box.

As Reese follows Chase to the cabin, he calls Finch. Finch says that Root questioned Carlo, and he confirmed that he went to the deli to cash in a free sandwich coupon. Finch offers to help Reese, but Reese tells him to stop the gang war. He continues driving out of range of the Machine's surveillance.

Carter asks Reese has planned when he retires. He finally says that there is no after for people like the two of them, and asks how she wound up in a car with him. Carter says that her life changed and he can change too, and Reese says that no one changes. She points out that he was a hobo when she met him, and figures that he took a detour. Fusco arrives with hot dogs and realizes that he was interrupting something. Reese insults him and a disgusted Fusco takes off. Carter asks what he meant, and Reese says that things tend to work out the way they're intended to. Terney calls her and says that Chase took off on a flight to Paris an hour ago. They've got a new case, and her reception breaks up.

Now

Chase comes up on Reese and says that the drugs aren't his. He figures that someone is trying to frame him. A shot rings out and Reese falls to the floor. He looks up and sees a man with a gun. Chase asks the man, his household chef Gil, what's going on. Gil says that he's Chase's half-brother and killed his father and his family. Gil's mother died and he had nobody, so he tracked down his father and discovered that he had a new family. When Gil's father paid him to go away, Gil decided that he didn't deserve to live. He was going to kill Chase as well, but Chase went to Paris and he had to wait seven years.

As a wounded Reese tries to get to his gun, Gil orders Chase to swallow the pills. Chase has no choice but to do so, and Gil says that he'll sit with him and watch him die. He spots Reese reaching for the gun and kicks it away, and says that Carter interrupted him seven years ago. Gil was too scared to kill a cop then, and figures that he should have killed her since she was killed anyway. He then drags Reese out into the snow, dumps him, and goes to get a shovel. Reese tries to get to his ankle holster, and draws his backup gun as Gil returns.

The Past

As they watch Benny, Carter talks about the night that they met. She figures that he was going to the Brooklyn Bridge to kill himself, and Reese takes out the photo of himself and Jessica. He describes what she was like, and how he left her because he thought she deserved happiness and wouldn't find it with him. Carter doesn't buy it and says that he can fool Iris and maybe even himself, but not her. Reese was active military already and knew what would happen. When he wonders why it matters, Carter figures that he's going to use it to shut everybody out until he dies... and because time is running out. Reese doesn't know what she's talking about, but Carter says that he's dying.

Now

Reese looks out the window and sees himself lying in the snow. His side is bleeding from the gunshot wound, and Carter tells him that he got Gil. Now Reese is in Gil's car, and he and Chase are both going to die. He has no signal on his cell phone, and "Carter" points out that Finch and the others have no idea where he is because he didn't reach out. She says that the cold will kill him unless he does something about it, and tells him to get Gil's keys.

Fusco calls Finch, who says that he's been unable to reach Reese. He asks Fusco to call if he hears from Reese, and Root tells Finch that Reese can take care of himself.

Reese gets out of Gil's car and crawls to the corpse. Carter tells him to keep moving because if he stops, he dies. She keeps taunting him, saying that he's survived worse than a psycho who got in a lucky shot. Reese reaches Gil's corpse and gets the keys, and Carter asks if he can make it back.

Once he's back in the car and has the heater going, Reese admits that he's missed Carter. She figures that he's a real cop now and chuckles, Reese suddenly feels like he's burning up, and Carter says that it's not too hot: it's too cold. She points out that the car won't start because of the cold, and Reese realizes that he's hallucinating the heat. Carter warns him that hallucinations are the last symptom of hypothermia, and he's freezing to death.

Reese briefly passes out until Carter prods him awake. He starts to go to the highway to flag down a car, but she warns him that he's confused due to the hypothermia. Reese sees a car's headlights and starts to get out, but Carter says that it's the moon. After a moment, Reese closes the car door and realizes that no one is coming.

At the subway station, Finch tells Root that it's not like Reese. He's isolated the last point when Reese's phone connected to their mesh network. Root says that she's sorry.

In the car, Carter admires the calm and asks Reese to tell her why he really left Jessica behind. Reese describes how on his first tour, they found a group of Rangers who were killed by the Taliban after killing their attackers. As they searched the body, Reese realized that each of them had a picture of a loved one, no matter what side they were on. He decided that if he didn't have a picture then he'd be better at his job, so he broke things off with Jessica. Carter figures that maybe he was right about being destined to die alone, but Reese says that he didn't shut her out. He was able to talk to her about the things that really mattered, but Carter points out that he didn't. She explains that they never had the conversation about Jessica and the photo he showed her. Carter says that she never gave him the photo back and he didn't want to talk about it. She was going to give him the photo when he shared that part of himself with her, but he never did.

Reese wishes that they had more time so he could have talked to her, and admits that he wants to close the case on her own so he could be close to Carter again. He didn't want to share that with anyone else. Carter admits that there was another reason she kept the photo: she hadn't seen him in love before. She tells Reese that he can feel that way again, and there are people who care about him if he lets them in. Reese asks her to stay with him a little longer, and Carter takes his hand.

A car pulls up and Reese looks over to discover that Carter is gone.
