It’s hard to say if in fact NBA All-Star LeBron James does have comedic chops, but if so, it’s fair and way too easy to declare then that he’s now taking those talents to Starz.
The network has officially picked up the series ‘Survivor’s Remorse,’ a half-hour scripted comedy by James, Mike O’Malley, Tom Werner, and James’ manager Maverick Carter.
The order by Starz is reportedly for six episodes, and looks set to be fast-tracked and take up an empty slot in the Starz fourth quarter schedule this year.
‘Survivor’s Remorse,’ which will hopefully open up a new genre of "Lebron-Coms," is set of course in the world of professional basketball, exploring that which happens dramatically and comically for those who make it big. The story will follow Cam Calloway, a b-ball great who finds himself in the spotlight in his early 20s having signed multi-million dollar deal with a pro team.
It looks to parallel’s the life of James, who even before he joined the NBA at the age of 18, right out of high school, was projected to be one of the greatest players of all time. Preliminary casting is underway, and a writer’s room has been assembled.
While billed as a comedy, it looks to carry some serious overtones as well, with storylines involving opportunistic friends and family, as well as dealing with humble beginnings and impoverished communities.
O’Malley, who’s previous writing credits include episodes of ‘Shameless,’ has dabbled in sports TV before, hosting the beloved Nickelodeon athletic competition show ‘Guts.’
