The Army of the Twelve Monkeys has a new leader!
Deadline reports that Syfy has signed 'Caprica' director Jeffrey Reiner to helm the cable network's hour-long pilot based on the 1995 science-fiction film '12 Monkeys.' The television adaptation was penned by 'Terra Nova' and 'Nikita' writers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett.
The original film starred Bruce Willis as a time-traveler from a desolate future devastated by an outbreak that has wiped out much of humanity. Brad Pitt co-starred as the unbalanced leader of a radical animal rights group, which could be responsible for the outbreak.
One person who is decidedly not on board is the film's director Terry Gilliam, "It doesn't have anything to do with me and no-one has contacted me," said the filmmaker. "It's a very dumb idea. If it was going to be any good, it would have to be written by David and Janet Peoples, who wrote the film."
Reiner is arguably a fairly uninspired pick for the anticipated project, as his resume is fairly uneven ranging from a few fantastic 'Friday Night Lights' and 'Awake' episodes to the recent NBC stinkers 'Do No Harm' and the failed 'Wonder Woman' pilot. Hopefully the director brings his A game to this pilot, as I am certainly not in Gilliam's mindset and think the concept has strong potential for a series.
Doesn't sound like a bad choice. He did quite great with Caprica at least, and fairly well with the Awake episodes as well.
