MTV has announced that Lauren Iungerich, the showrunner and creator of its acclaimed series 'Awkward' will be leaving the show at the conclusion of its third season, which wraps Thursday.
"Awkward is a wonderful series and we appreciate the creativity and devotion Lauren brought to this show," Susanne Daniels, MTV programming president, said in revealing the news via a written statement. "We wish her the best in her new ventures."
The show will return this October for the back-half of its 20-episode order. There are no plans to cancel the series, so a search for a new showrunner has already begun.
The show has quickly become one of MTV's top-scripted series. It is the longest-running scripted comedy on the network, which is known for its high turnover, and drew 2.1 million total viewers for its latest season premiere in April.
It is not known if this news has anything to do with MTV passing on Iungerich's newest pilot, 'Hot Mess,' earlier this year. She left the project right before MTV passed, so maybe she knew the writing was on the wall with it. Previously MTV had passed on her first program, 'Dumb Girls.'
I do not catch that many MTV shows nowadays (even though I used to watch every 'Real World' season and marathon that the network could throw at you). Is there anything I am missing out on? Is 'Awkward' worthwhile?
Here is a trailer for its latest season.
