Big news out of BET today, as the network has renewed seven series, brought back Comic View and ordered a full season of Gabrielle Union's Being Mary Jane.
The network, which is owned by Viacom, is the top provider of programming for African-American audiences and continues trying to grow its original offerings.
Among the series that were renewed today were The Game, which recently passed the 100 episode mark and hails from Mara Brock Akil, Salim Akil, Kenny Smith and Erica Montolfo-Bura. Let's Stay Together will return for a fourth season; the Real Husbands of Hollywood a second (this was previously announced); 106 & Park will be back for a 13th season, while Apollo Live with Tony Rock; Bobby Jones Gospel (which is the longest continually running original series on cable TV); Sunday Best and The Sheards are all coming back.
A new talk show hosted by Bishop T.D. Jakes is coming to the network in late 2013 called Mind, Body & Soul. It will look at subjects such as relationships, wellness and finance.
Being Mary Jane originated as an original TV movie at the network and stars Union as Mary Jane Paul, a TV news anchor that is devoted to her family. That movie did well enough that BET wants a full series. It will also feature Omari Hardwick, Lisa Vidal, Richard Roundtree, Richard Brooks and Margaret Avery, with a 2014 launch planned.
Any thoughts about any of these?
