Sherrie Hewson talks about the new series of Benidorm which returns on Monday, January 11th at 9pm on itv.
Does it feel good to be back?
It’s always great to be back. I love my character so much. Joyce is extraordinary, when I read the scripts I can hear my voice. I think Derren writes in that way, he creates these amazing characters and brings them all together in this one show. I love Joyce and even after my 40 odd years in the business, this is the pinnacle. She’s everything I would want to do really, there’s drama and comedy with her. She has a sadness and she’s hysterically funny too, there’s so many dimensions to her. I love the way she’s a snob and uses a posh accent. Of course she lets it slip all the time and only uses it when she thinks she’s being superior.
How is the Solana for her this year?
I think she does alright, it’s only a three star hotel and as Crystal (Joan Collins) says ‘don’t think above your station’. Crystal says we’re egg and chips, we’re not steak and caviar. She’s right in a way, that’s how we do so well.
Do you like it when Joan Collins pops into the show?
There’s something coming up where Crystal is not very nice to Joyce. She’s the only one who intimidates Joyce. Not only is she the boss but she’s a Hollywood superstar in her own right. Joyce admires that but finds it intimidating because that’s what she’s striving to be.
How’s Joyce’s relaIonship with Mateo and Les/Lesley this series?
Les always sees right through her and Mateo is just grateful she gave him his job back. She rules them, or at least tries to! Les knows she pays the wages so keeps her on side.
There’s a new girl on the block, Amber. What does Joyce think of her?
She doesn’t want her around because she’s pretty and young, but she needs the help behind the bar.
