Primetime Ratings, Tuesday, 5/20/14

Supernatural (The CW)

NBC won the 18-49 demo battle, while ABC drew the most total viewers.

'The Voice's sixth season finale shot up seven tenths from last week, earning a 3.3. That sounds great on paper, but it's also down over a full point from last spring's 4.4 finale rating. ABC's competing finale of 'Dancing with the Stars' scored a 2.4, down three tenths from last spring's 2.7.

A special Wednesday airing of 'American Idol' posted a 1.7, way up from the 0.6 the season finale of FOX's 'Glee' earned in the same slot last week. The series premiere of much buzzed about new reality series 'I Wanna Marry Harry' disappointed in a big way, earning a woeful 0.7 demo, and losing nearly 70% of 'Idol's lead-in audience. 'Joe Millionaire' this definitely isn't.

A 'Judge Judy Primetime' special earned about what most expected for CBS, posting a 0.9 in the 18-49 demo, and just under 5.7 million total viewers. The 'ACM: All-Star Salute to the Troops' country music special also earned a 0.9.

As for The CW, the ninth season finale of network elder statesman 'Supernatural' jumped up a very healthy three tenths to a 1.1, becoming the only CW finale to break the 1.0 barrier. This caps off 'SPN's highest rated season since the Lucifer/Michael apocalypse arc that dominated year five.

PRIMETIME PROGNOSTICATION

The five main factors I consider when making a prediction are thus:

1. Does the show win its timeslot, and how often? (CW shows are exempt from this criteria.)

2. How do the show's ratings compare to similar programs on the same network? (Self explanatory.)

3. How long has the show been on the air? (Veteran series are always more likely to get renewed.)

4. Does the show have any high-profile leads? (Never discount star power.)

5. How much does the show cost to make? (Approximately, exact TV budgets are hard to come by.)
