Primetime Ratings, Friday, 5/2/14

ABC picked up the 18-49 demo win, while CBS drew the most total viewers.

A 'Shark Tank' special entitled "Swimming with Sharks" earned a 1.5, topping 'Last Man Standing's usual performance in the time period. The special was followed by a regular episode of 'Tank,' which shot up five tenths to a 2.3, setting a new season high for the reality program. '20/20' (which featured an interview with Donald Sterling squeeze V. Staviano) rose three tenths to a 1.7.

The Eye had a fairly good night, with 'Unforgettable' starting things off by rising one tenth to a 1.0. Lead-out 'Hawaii' Five-0' then dipped a tenth to a 1.2, but 'Blue Bloods' turned the tide back around, rising a tenth to a 1.5. 'Dateline' matched last week's 1.1 for the Peacock.

'Grimm' did its lead-in one better, increasing a single tenth to a 1.3. 'Hannibal' kept things steady, matching last week's 0.9. Considering that 'Hannibal' is actually doing slightly better now than at this point last spring, I'll be outright shocked if it doesn't get a third season.

Two new hours of 'Kitchen Nightmares' posted a 0.9 and 0.8 respectively, down considerably from last week's 1.0 and 1.2. 'Whose Line Is It Anyway's rise proved brief, with the improv series dropping back down to a 0.4. As if that wasn't bad enough, 'Hart of Dixie' matched its series low of 0.2. I still think it'll get renewed for syndication reasons, but just barely.

PRIMETIME PROGNOSTICATION

The five main factors I consider when making a prediction are thus:

1. Does the show win its timeslot, and how often? (CW shows are exempt from this criteria.)

2. How do the show's ratings compare to similar programs on the same network? (Self explanatory.)

3. How long has the show been on the air? (Veteran series are always more likely to get renewed.)

4. Does the show have any high-profile leads? (Never discount star power.)

5. How much does the show cost to make? (Approximately, exact TV budgets are hard to come by.)

Note: Ratings expectations for shows airing on Friday night are generally lower.
