Primetime Ratings, Tuesday, 4/29/14

CBS won Tuesday night in all measures.

'NCIS' started off the Eye's night by jumping up three tenths to a 2.5. 'NCIS: LA' stayed flat with its last original outing's 2.1. 'Person of Interest' rose a single tenth to a 1.9. Moving on to the Peacock, 'The Voice' set a new series low of 2.7, although it still topped the night in the 18-49 demo.

'About a Boy' fell three tenths to a 1.6, a new series low. It's still the third highest rated scripted show on NBC though, and is thus in no real danger. Lead-out 'Growing Up Fisher' dropped a tenth to a 1.4, but is still fairly safe from the ax. 'Chicago Fire' rose a tenth to a 1.8.

'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' rose two tenths to a 2.1 for ABC. 'The Goldbergs' seems intent on getting renewed, rising three tenths to a 1.7. Doomed sitcom 'Trophy Wife' mounted a last-ditch rally, rising two tenths to a 1.0. 'Celebrity Wife Swap' continues to crumble, dipping a tenth to a 0.8.

Speaking of crumbling, FOX's 'Glee' once again matched its previous series low of 0.9. Ouch. 'New Girl' followed that by setting its own new series low of 1.1. Double ouch. 'The Mindy Project' did rise a tenth to a 1.1, but that's hardly anything to boast about.

As for The CW, 'The Originals' finally starting pulling out of its tailspin, increasing two tenths to a 0.8. 'Supernatural' capitalized on the interest surrounding the planted pilot for its spin-off 'Bloodlines,' rising a tenth to a 1.0. However, one has to wonder whether the spin-off will even go forward now, after the decidedly mixed reaction the episode received from fans.

The five main factors I consider when making a prediction are thus:

1. Does the show win its timeslot, and how often? (CW shows are exempt from this criteria.)

2. How do the show's ratings compare to similar programs on the same network? (Self explanatory.)

3. How long has the show been on the air? (Veteran series are always more likely to get renewed.)

4. Does the show have any high-profile leads? (Never discount star power.)

5. How much does the show cost to make? (Approximately, exact TV budgets are hard to come by.)
