The National Geographic Channel was launched in the United States in January 2001. The network shows a variety of different documentaries on science, nature and history. The channel is available to view on satellite and cable via subscription.
The first National Geographic Channel was broadcast in Australia and Europe on September 1997. The channel now airs in 143 countries world wide and can be seen in approximately 160 million homes. The U.S. version is a partnership between National Geographic and FOX Networks. Although most of the channels shows are not shown on a normal schedule, nor stick around for more than a few seasons, a couple of their series have had staying power such as
