According to what I have found, Carson Daly has decided to start his show back up immediately while Leno and Conan will come back in January...since their ratings have bombed since the strike.

As far as actual negotiations: yeah, it's gonna be a long strike. Friday before last, talks broke down. The writers guilds have said that the producers gave them an ultimatum that the writers drop six of their demands or there would be no negotiations. Last week, the guild filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board saying that action was illegal. So the two sides aren't talking.
As far as effects on TV:
To expand on what Me said, Carson Daly had come back without writers two weeks ago. It was announced yesterday and today that Leno, Conan, and Kimmel will come back without writers in January, which will be two months into the strike (which is the same length of time it took Johnny Carson to come back without writers in the 1988 strike). Letterman has been trying to negotiate a deal with the WGA to return with writers–he can try for an independent deal because he owns his show, unlike other late-night hosts.
The writers guilds have not granted waivers for writers to write for the Golden Globe or for clips to be shown without paying residuals at the Academy Awards; because of this, actors (and others) may be reluctant to attend since it may be viewed as crossing the picket line.
And of the 52 scripted network shows in production when the strike started, only two are still in production: Eli Stone (ending Dec. 21, this Friday) and October Road (ending Jan. 11).
TheFutonCritic has a table of how many episodes are left to air of a bunch of series. There's starting to be more zeroes on the scripted shows left. (Zero Pushing Daisies left? No!) |

Has any networks actually canceled any series' all together because of this? |

24 has been canceled for this season, as in "not appearing at all."
Lost may only show half of this seasons episodes when it finally comes on. |

24 wasnt helped by Keifer Sutherland being convicted either. It would have had to have been postponed one way or another, or have a good month of episodes with Jack absent (maybe that would have been a good way of testing who could carry the show without Keifer) |

Originally, Keifer was going to split up his jailtime so that it wouldn't interfere with 24 taping: 18 days during the usual Christmas break and then the other 30 days after the season wrapped. Now he can get all 48 days done at once, I guess.
Only Nashville and Viva Laughlin have been pulled off the air this season with episodes unaired, but there are shows that won't be returning for another season when the strike wraps up, like Journeyman, which saw the date NBC contractually had to renew by pass without any action.
In addition to 24 not airing this season and Lost only airing 8 of its 16 intended episodes, Scrubs may never get a proper finale because this was its last season and the strike obviously disrupted that. |

The creator of Scrubs stated he would release a direct-to-DVD finale for the box set if they cant resume production until much later. |

The Writers suck. Yes, it's not fair that they're not getting paid properly, but for them, it's all about them. What about all the other people -- make-up, janitorial, set design/construction, et al. -- that are focked?
I know a few people that are out of work due to this.
Sorry, no sympathy from me when it comes to strikes. So selfish. |

It's also affected the Canadian broadcasting! (because they're airing all their American stuff first, and are trying to ween it out as long as they can...shows are being canceled!) |

You're not a writer, you cant possibly know what's going on in their lives or how there trying to secure their families and future incomes. Until you do, stop being a public sheep judging things you have no right to judge. "The writers", to half the public cattle, is just a word that can be replaced with another the instant another strike occurs, they have no real understanding of what's going on.
Next thing you know, the caterers will strike, and then and only then will they support the returning writers because there "not being fed" |

The profession doesn't matter. I've seen plenty of strikes destroy associated businesses. Strikes are selfish. |

I heard that Jay Leno starts up again Jan 2. Should I assume he will go at it without a writing staff? That will be interesting. |

I read where he made some sort of deal with his writers and their union, so whether that means he is paying them to continue until they settle the strike... |

He probably has enough money stashed away to pay something of his own. He does own quite a bit of old fashioned classic cars and I know that was not a pretty penny.
God forbid if Conan doesn't get a deal with them. |

Conan used to be a writer for The Simpsons, so I'd think he could write some of his own material. |
