Oh this is a sticky one! Sometimes things like this work and sometimes they don't and sometimes they become something completely different!

The Damned, a favorite of mine, have had only front man Dave Vanian as a consistent member and currently have only 2 original members, Dave and Captain Sensible...I still view them as "The Damned" in large part because of the consistent voice.

Van Halen...I wasn't sure it would work without Diamond Dave but was surprised when it did, though I think of that period more as "Van Hagar" because of the different sound and approach...but when they went with Gary Cherone...

Here's one for you Chris...are the Monkees really still the Monkees without Mike Nesmith?

I'd say no, since Mike is my favorite Monkee, lol. Now if you had said Peter...

I do look at it differently when someone quits. The Rolling Stones has one of the biggest member turnarounds, yet still seem like the Stones. Mainly because the core of the group is there. I've seen Led Zep a few times with just Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, but it wasn't the same since John Paul Jones WANTED to participate but was left out.

So without Mike maybe they should have called themselves "Pisces, Aquarius & Jones" ? lol

Don't feel like looking up the link, but John Paul, Jimmy, and Jason, won't do this little project under the Led name.

Now they're not going to continue at all. The band tried out singers, but no one worked out, so I guess they said "f*** it". Linkage, although, I'm sure many of you have already heard about this.

No plant, no band. I personally think a band is over when any of the members are replaced. I also think that if the lead singer(s) are out, it's no longer a band. Anyone can play the drums, but no one has that same voice. That is not LZ anymore.

Alice in Chains got a new singer and he's great. He's already been accepted by the vast majority of their fan base. Considering he had to replace the amazing Layne Staley, who is no longer with us, that's quite an accomplishment.

They've done a bit of touring and are even talking about putting out a new album. I don't think very many people, including myself, would ever think to hear new Alice in Chains songs.

I understand that and I know that's happened to a lot of bands, I just don't think they should be, that's all.

Do you know the story of Santana? They started in the late 60's with Greg Rolie as their lead singer. He then quit along with a very young guitarist named Neal Schon and formed Journey. Meanwhile, Santana would then add a new singer for each album through the seventies...7 in all. They've had somewhere around 18 lead singers in all perform on their albums.

* Gregg Rolie - 1966-72
* Leon Thomas - 1973
* Leon Patillo -1973-1975
* Evan Thur - 1974-75
* Greg Walker - 1975-76, 1976-79, 1983-85
* Luther Rabb - 1976
* Joel Badie - 1976
* Chad Kroeger - 2006, Present
* Alex Ligertwood - 1979-83, 1984-85, 1987, 1989-91, 1992-94
* Buddy Miles - 1986, 1987
* Tony Lindsay - 1991, 1995 -Present
* Vorriece Cooper - 1993
* Curtis Salgado - 1995
* Ifrab Musflyleng - 1995
* Rob Thomas - 1999
* Seal 2000
* Michelle Branch 2000
* Placido Domingo 2000

The Santana of the '70s was amazing. I'm not really into the newer stuff.

"Evil Ways," "Black Magic Woman," and "She's Not There." Great stuff.

Yeah, i love the self titled Santana album with Soul Sacrifice, Evil Ways and Persuasion on it.

Persuasion

Evil Ways

Soul Sacrifice

great drums on this one!

Have you ever heard the original Fleetwood Mac version of Black Magic Woman? Recorded before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had joined, and sung by Peter Green. I like the Santana version much better.

Has KISS always remained KISS with the various member changes?

Current Members
Paul Stanley
Gene Simmons
Eric Singer (in the "Cat" make-up, which imo is wrong)
Tommy Thayer (in the "Space Ace" make-up, which imo is REALLY wrong)

Former members
Ace Frehley
Peter Criss
Bruce Kulick
Eric Carr
Vinnie Vincent
Mark St. John

I'm seriously torn on this because with Simmons and Stanely still there (the "voices" of the band) it sounds like KISS, but without Ace (and Peter) its not exactly the same...

They do sound the same, so yes, I would say KISS is still KISS. Once Gene or Paul leave (or dies) then the band is no more. I do miss Peter singing on Black Diamond, though. I do wish the new dudes would have created a new character. Eric joined back in during a mid tour, replacing Peter who quit when he was offered less money than Ace. So Eric took over and used Peter's makeup, as if to fool everyone.

Honestly, I think it depends on the band, and how much the band is recognized by their front man, and how much a front man contributes in terms of songwriting, musical direction, and the music in general. Like, can you picture Nirvana continuing without Cobain? No, which is why they didn't. But in other circumstances, it's different. It's a very hard thing to debate...

Usually, if one or two core members leave out of a four or five member band, then it's not THAT big of a deal. But if you're the only one left out of the core lineup, such as a band like Guns, you should probably consider a name change, regardless of how incredible your voice is. Ah, Mr. Rose, why did you have to jump into the pool of crazy sauce??? WHY????

That's the way I feel about it too. If The Who tried performing without Roger or Pete, it wouldn't be right. heck, it's almost wrong that John is missing since he was such an incredible bassist. Keith has been gone so long that he seems like just an old band mate. Queen without Freddie Mercury seems wrong to me, at least under the same name. And it would have been the same deal with Led Zeppelin.
