Sara and Brian Fitzgerald’s life with their young son and their two-year-old daughter, Kate, is forever altered when they learn that Kate has leukemia. The parents’ only hope is to conceive another child, specifically intended to save Kate’s life. For some, such genetic engineering would raise both moral and ethical questions; for the Fitzgeralds, Sara in particular, there is no choice but to do whatever it takes to keep Kate alive. And what it takes is Anna.
Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) and Anna (Abigail Breslin) share a bond closer than most sisters: though Kate is older, she relies on her little sister—in fact, her life depends on Anna.
Throughout their young lives, the sisters endure various medical procedures and hospital stays—just another part of their close-knit family’s otherwise normal life. Sara (Cameron Diaz), a loving wife and mother who left her career as an attorney to care for her daughter, is sometimes lost inside the single-minded caregiver she has become in her efforts to save Kate. Her strong, supportive husband, Brian (Jason Patric), is often rendered powerless and passive by his wife’s strength and determination. And their only son, Jesse (Evan Ellingson), drifts, at times all but forgotten as Kate and Anna take center stage.
Until Anna, now 11, says “no.” Seeking medical emancipation, she hires her own lawyer (Alec Baldwin), initiating a court case that divides the family and that could leave Kate’s rapidly failing body in the hands of fate.
Based on the bestselling book from Jodi Picoult, “My Sister’s Keeper” reveals surprising truths that challenge one’s perceptions of family love and loyalty and give new meaning to the definition of healing |

I saw something about this movie yesterday during the local news, and thought it was a story about a make-a-wish child meeting Cameron Diaz. Then they explained it was a movie. The girl looked like an authentic youngster with leukemia...something they usually get wrong. |

Yeah, this defiantly look like a movie I will see with a box of tissues.
I was surprised Diaz got the role though. I like her, but isn't she too young? She's only 36 and playing the mother of teenagers. |

I think they are making the characters younger than the book characters. The husband also looks a bit young, as does the brother, who looks just as young as Abigail Breslin, when he is supposed to be 18 (I just looked him up, and he'll be 21 next month, so hmm..) Diaz is also blond (Sara is supposed to be a brunette). Hopefully, Diaz will be able to pull off the seriousness of the role.
Apparently, the Fanning sisters were asked to play the Fitzgerald sisters, but Dakota didn't want to shave her hair, so she turned it down. |

This movie cheapens the experience of a family struggling to come to terms with the impending loss of a loved one. Cry? I very nearly did. Just not in the way Cameron probably hoped.

Ugh, what is with all the spammers lately, getting all creative, and trying to stay on-topic, and then slip in some spam?
Well, anyways, I saw the film finally .. I was impressed with the acting as a whole, but I liked the book so much better.
I did not like how they totally took the Jesse is a troubled teen storyline and kind of dropped it, but in the end, the kept in the line "Jesse changed his life around". Like.. it makes no sense in the movie at all. He starts no fires, doesn't smoke, doesn't drink, and doesn't even live on his own. Jesse was a bit unbelievable in the book, but in the movie, his character just doesn't work, especially given the limitations in the script. Not the actors fault, he does fine, but I felt bad, considering his role had so much more to offer (like arson).
I was kind of annoyed they dropped the Julia/Campbell sub-plot out, but didn't miss it. The film worked better without it, IMO, so I don't care too much about that.
Don't like how they changed the setting from Rhode Island to California. What's the point of that?
Sofia V. is amazing at her role, as is Cameron and Jason. Very emotional. Abigail did okay too. Alec could've done a better seizure.
Most of the film they had to change around, to fit it in a 1 hour and 45-ish time frame, so I don't care too much about minor changes, but OMG. I really hate the ending for this film. It's like they kept the words from the book, but changed the outcome. It makes no sense at all. Instead of killing off Anna, like in the book - a way more powerful and meaningful ending, they do a cop out, kill the cancer stricken Kate, and change the whole meaning to the story. The end was cheesy and made me roll my eyes. Plus, it's like they kept the Kate story from the book (where she epilogues the story, pretty much) except as Anna. So therefore, it makes no sense, and is stupid. I don't know. It kind of ruined the film for me, as I enjoyed it, but the ending. Ugh. I hope the DVD contains an alternate ending containing the real ending. |

andrew, after reading your review, I'm glad I didn't go see it. Ugh. Changing the ending would be a terrible idea. |

I mean, I enjoyed the movie, for the most part, but the minor things (the ending, character changes) kind of ruined it for me. If I were you, I would consider renting it, if you don't have anything better to watch, but what I loved about the book was the ending, and for it to be completely different and cliche is so frustrating.
Apparently, most people hated the REAL ending so the people wrote the movie ending differently so audiences would be happier. But the movie is a drama. I hate happily ever afters in dramas. It just isn't realistic. MSK isn't a "HAPPILY ever after" by any means, but compared to the other, it feels like it.
ETA: Apparently, The Pact was made into a Lifetime movie, so I'll have to watch that sometime. I liked The Pact even more than MSK.. Off-topic. |
