How it worked:
- Metropolitan areas (the cities and their suburbs) of 1 million people or more (55 in all).
- All data was then organized on a per-capita basis (brainiest cities, not the biggest).
- Criteria divided into two halves (half for education, and half for intellectual environment).
- The education half encompassed how many residents had bachelor’s degrees (35 percent weighting) and graduate degrees (15 percent). No credit was given for “some college,” or “some grad school.”
- The intellectual environmental half had three subparts. Nonfiction book sales (25 percent), ratio of institutions of higher education (15 percent), and percentage of eligible voters who cast ballots in the last presidential election (10 percent).

I'd have to put Minnesota at the bottom. Those are the idiots who elected Jesse Ventura and Al Franken. |

Yay, SLC is 14! I hate Ralph Becker though.
Even though I'm not surprised, I'm really disappointed that Cincinnati is so low. (#43) |

Philly is 11th! It beat NYC!
What's funny (and scary) is the state capitol Harrisburg is in the bottom 5.
Blame it on the Amish. |
