This week, NBC Sports Network announced that it was renewing its partnership with the Main Events fight promotion company, and will broadcast up to sixteen network television shows over the next two years. Boxing’s return to a major cable sports network is an exciting development for a sport needful of primetime exposure, and NBC’s ‘Fight Night’ will ideally facilitate the development and exposure of new stars. The accessibility of boxing on network television—where fans aren’t forced to pay exorbitant fees or remain rooted to their couches early into the morning—should attract a new demographic, and crucially, allow fans to attach themselves to emerging fighters. By itself, Fight Night will not rejuvenate boxing, nor has its product been perfect, but its existence provides a new and necessary stage upon which fresh talent can find an audience.
