Mistaken Identity - Recap
<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->Frank tells Moore that he doesn't want to attend an event for the Citizen's Defense League. He thinks they aren't a true charity event and refuses to go. Moore tries to convince him that a member of the NYPD should go. Frank states that they raise money by vilifying the NYPD and his final answer is no.
Danny and Maria show up at the scene of a mosque bombing. They meet with Fire Marshall Rick Kelly, who debriefs them on the pipe bombing. They are still assessing the damage and no one was hurt. Imam Ansar explains what happened when the bomb off. There have been several break ins and some people don't want the mosque in the neighborhood.
Back at the station, Maria informs Danny of the suspects who have previously broken into the mosque. One man broke in and defiled the place. They left a graffiti tag for White Nation, a racist prison gang that now operates on the outside. One man, Kevin Conklin, was questioned but didn't give anything up. Danny can't wait to meet him.
Dana greets Jamie at the station and he introduces her to Janko. Jamie explains that he went to law school with Dana and tonight he will be her date to the bar association dinner. Janko looks on as the two leave together.
While Frank talks to the mayor on the phone, Moore stops him from classifying the bombing as a hate crime. Moore informs him that two presidents of civil rights groups want to talk to him and suggests that he attend the CDL dinner. Frank doesn't want to look like he is currying favor though but agrees to meet the press in a half hour.
Danny and Maria confront Conklin on the street about the mosque bombing. He spouts racist speech which causes Maria to knee him and put the cuffs on him. They bring him in for questioning but Conklin won't talk. A witness, Mrs. Sudarsky, meets with Maria and Danny and tells them what she saw. She saw the man that threw the bomb and says it wasn't Conklin. She claims the man was a Muslim who wore a robe. They aren't sure why a Muslim would want to hurt his own people.
At the mosque, Danny spots policemen attempting to arrest a man. He rushes over and the officer says the man punched him because he asked him a question. The officer says he fits the description of the subject but Danny has a picture that proves otherwise. The man told the officer he was Sikh but the officer insisted that he was Muslim.
Moore meets Frank to inform him of what happened between the officer and the Sikh man. The man claims to have been selected based on racial profiling. He is Parmar Hameed, the chief of surgery at NYU. The CDL is filing a lawsuit against the NYPD for violating Hameed's civil rights so he won't have to attend the dinner after all.
Danny and Maria pay a visit to Mustafa Haddad, the only Muslim they know in the neighborhood. They arrive at his lounge and he isn't happy to see them. Danny shows him the sketch drawing but he doesn't believe what a white witness saw. Mustafa refuses to help though because he doesn't like how the NYPD investigated his brother's murder.
Jamie and Dana visit a bar that he frequents. Janko runs into them and sits down to hear about their night. She tells a story about something that happened to them the other day and goes back to her friends. Dana wonders if Jamie is interested in dating her but he says Janko is only his work partner.
Danny vents to Maria about the lack of evidence in their case. Rick calls and tells Danny that there was another bomb. They arrive on the scene and Rick explains that it was the same kind of bomb but this time a victim may die from their injuries. Danny runs over to Mustafa who was injured in the blast. Mustafa explains what happened and asks Danny to find who did this.
Back at the station, Maria reads the list of possible suspects that Mustafa provided. None of the names check out and Danny is checking online for anyone bragging about bombings. He finds one man, Baahir Zaki, who lives near both of the bombed buildings.
Jamie wakes up with Dana. She pushes the subject of Janko further and says it's alright if he dates her. They live across the country from each other and they aren't exclusively dating each other. Jamie gets up to leave for work.
In Frank's office, Officer Kamins, the man who was punched by Hameed, is happy to have been cleared and not get the NYPD in trouble. He suspects he might have had the punch coming because he feels he would have done the same thing in Hameed's position. Frank reminds him that they work in a city full of immigrants, themselves included.
Danny and Maria visit Zaki's apartment and question his use of a suspicious website. His wife Aaliya and daughter Sudi enter the room. Danny says Zaki has been plenty of help and they leave. Outside, both officers agree that Zaki is lying and think that Aaliya knows something. Danny didn't question her because he knows she won't talk while her husband is there.
At the Reagan's house, Frank tells Erin that he doesn't know who's right in the fight between Kamins and Hameed. He doesn't want either of them to face blow back because they are model citizens. He suggests that the D.A.'s office take this as a case of two wrongs that cancel each other out. At dinner, the Reagans discuss religions and the conflicts they have had.
Maria finds Aaliya on the street and asks her a few questions. Aaliya states that her husband is a good man. He has been laid off for the last six months and his father has been in the hospital. Maria mentions the stay he had at a psych hospital. Aaliya reveals that Zaki has been acting strange and angry at Allah. He has been working at his father's and gives the address to Maria. The officers head to Zaki's father's house and they find bombs inside. There is also a flyer for the Muslim Day parade and they worry that he will target it.
With only three hours until the parade, Danny and Maria scour the area will it will take place. He receives a call that Zaki was arrested when he tried to visit the hospital.
Janko asks Jamie why he has never talked about Dana. He says that they have an on again off again relationship. He also mentions that Dana was jealous of Janko. She jokes that if they were to date, they would be incompatible. Her father was a banker who ran a ponzi scheme and is currently in jail. She hasn't spoken to him in three years and promises him that it's her family not his that isn't good enough.
In interrogation, Danny and Maria question Zaki. They question him about the bombs and he admits to being responsible. He says that if Allah is as great as he claims he will intervene. Danny instructs Maria to shut the parade down. She leaves and Danny asks about the location of the bombs. He wants to convince the Muslim people that they are alone. Danny tries to convince Zaki to reveal the location of the bombs by saying his children are at the parade. He doesn't respond though. Danny brings in Sudi and asks Zaki what it would be like to lose his daughter. This finally convinces him to help and he says they only have 19 minutes.
Police clear the parade route ahead of Danny and Maria's arrival. A man in a bomb suit approaches a speaker near the main stage and finds a huge bomb inside. He works to defuse it while a crowd looks on from down the street. He gives the clear signal and Maria congratulates Danny on a good job.
Mustafa goes to the station to talk with Danny. The two make up over their differences and Mustafa gives him a gift that represents friends from unexpected places.
In an empty bar, Frank meets with Hameed. He wants to continue on with his lawsuit but Frank suggests that he take an opportunity to shine a light on injustices. Frank asks about the dagger that Sikhs carry. Hameed is grateful that the charges against him were reduced. Frank apologizes that Kamins insulted Hameed and his heritage. Kamins enters and walks up to their table. Frank knows they met but believes they deserved a do-over. Kamins shakes hands with Hameed.
