Actor William Hartnell is feeling trapped following a succession of hard-man roles. Verity Lambert, trapped as a production assistant by the television industry's glass ceiling, also feels frustrated. When the BBC Head of Drama promotes Verity but requires her to create a science fiction show for children, Verity leaps at the opportunity and finds with Hartnell on the new BBC series Doctor Who.

Doctor Who Bio-Pic Long on Character, Short on Doc...Rating: 2 likes, 0 dislikes Doctor Who devotees will probably be disappointed by An Adventure in Space and Time (2013), a movie biography about the birth of the beloved series on the BBC in 1963. I found it engrossing. The production is long on character and atmosphere, reminiscent of British dramas like The Remains of the Day or The Dresser, and short on Doctor Who trivia. It mainly concerns William (Bill) Hartnell (played by David Bradley), the ageing actor who finds out that he is replaceable as the first Doctor and, unlike the Doctor, quite mortal.
