Set in the 1870s American West, this one-season Western on ABC,
A Man Called Shenandoah focuses on a man found by two bounty hunters, near death out on a trail after seemingly spending the freezing night. The bounty hunters drag the man to the nearest town, hoping to make some money off of him. Unfortunately for all involved, no one knows who the man is, nor does he appear on any wanted list. The man visits a doctor who tells him to go by the name Shenandoah and that he looks to be about 34 (oh, and it probably would not be a good idea to strain yourself to recover your memory). He is brought back to some semblance of strength, but he lacks the memory of his past. Shenandoah, portrayed by
Robert Horton, is the focus of the show, and episodes follow him as he tries to piece together his history (including his real name).
Theme: An 1820s folk song now in the public domain:
"Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you, away you rolling river,
Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you, away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter, away you rolling river,
I'll take her 'cross your rollin' water, away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
'Tis seven long years since last I saw you. Away you rolling river,
'Tis seven long years since last I saw you. Away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter, away you rolling river,
Oh Shenandoah, I'll come to claim her. Away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
In all these years, whene'er I saw her, we have kept our love a secret,
Oh! Shenandoah, I do adore her, away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
Oh Shenandoah, she's bound to leave you. Away you rolling river,
Oh Shenandoah, I'll not deceive you. away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri."
