| Showtimes Outer Limits pilot episode

!!!!!! This review contains spoilers !!!!!!
It makes me laugh when people make a big deal out of the Writers Guild Strike as if their world ended. Have people forgotten how much great tv has been out there? Case in point Showtimes The Outer Limit was an ambition revamped version of the classic series. It had a long run and probably showed Showtimes courageous strength in starting series of their own (much like HBO).
in the pilot episode called "The Sandkings" presumable laid of by his science company decides to steal back a sample from mars of a rare alien species. Experimenting with the egg samples the species evolves into a huge group of carnivorious creatures which he names "The Sandkings". The Sandkings was a story adapted by George R. R. Martin
with notable differences.. From what I read so far the original story sounds like “Gremlins” with Simon Kress taking in these Sandkings as a source of amusement (not scientific research).
No matter what differences were it’s a standout episode. Specifically, the special effects for the Sandkings. They did make the story somewhat melodramatic with focus on Kress’s family which is rather uninteresting and this a-hole named Dave Stockley who pretends to be Simon’s friend but is only watching out for his own interest.
Beau Bridges as Simon Kress is awesome. By this point, Beau is a movie/tv vet so there is no role he can’t pull let alone the family man/underappreciated employee/mad scientist. You can find this episode on the first season set by MGM on DVD.
