I must say when I started to watch this show I wasn't that impressed by it or the characters but as its gone on I keep finding myself returning to watch each episode until now I'm looking forward to them. I like the idea that the 'Red John' theme are being developed, although very slowly and just hope that the show continues to grow.

Just my thoughts

I started watching it recently too (I think they had a special airing on a Friday or something) and loved it. Patrick Jane is such an awesome character and his whole mentalist approach puts a neat, new spin on the run-of-the-mill crime shows.

Although the title for the show is a bit off putting to us Brits....as over here, thanks to 'Alan Patridge' a Mentalist means a nutter.

I've liked the show a fair amount, too, but they've stumbled a bit on occassion. They seem to be playing less on his "mentalist" skills as time passes. The guy, despite his personal tragedy, is a showman. He should naturally show off his ability a bit like he did in the early eps (example, when he played rock/paper/scissors and beat the deputy every single time).

Also, the ep with him blinded was just a gimmicky piece of crap, with two absolutely absurd coincidence plot requirements and another highly improbable one -- the point where he gets blinded was just ridiculously convenient to the show's plot, and the introduction from absolutely nowhere of the "boyfriend/villain" was trite and hackneyed. I forget what the other major coincidence element (along with the blindness) was that made this rather lame ep "work", but the whole plot collapses if this spectacularly unlikely coincidence doesn't happen. That, along with the "idiot plot" (the only reason the plot advances is because every single person involved is a total, absolute moron. One moment of vague intellect and the whole story crashes and burns) are inexcusable in modern professional TV, at least at the Hollywood level.

The writers need to do a better job creating a season-long story arc and put elements of it into all the eps, so that the characters develop and flesh out with time. Not necessarily so much that the show becomes episodic, but you should not be able to completely randomize the order of most of the shows and not have it suffer, either. That's cheap from a writing point of view but it's a throwback to 70s style television. About the only thing that's even vaguely ordering of the shows is the red-john subplot, and that only plays so far into about 4 or 5 out of the 17-odd which have aired. The rest of them could be viewed in almost any order and there would be no issue for the most part.
