The director managed to combine hard reality with a sense of ghostliness. Although this is not a "horror" flick, the eerie, surreal scenes evoked a sense of fearful anxiety within me. The reality comes into play when the young, Mexican girls are dehumanized as they are forced into prostitituon through circumstances not of their own making. As the camera begins to focus on the dark, wet, narrow alleys, it is a warning to the viewer that something terrible is about to happen. The two detectives involved are well characterized in that they have the same needs as anyone else and you can see how the case is ensnaring them. In one scene I got a ghostly sensation from the human skeletons the migrants run into as they cross the hot, waterless desert and the fear on their faces made me wonder if they thought they too may end up as skeletons. There are other "death valley-like" scenes. Couple all that with unscrupulous people on both sides of the border and it is hard to pull away from watching the movie. I love the characters and the scenery. The storytelling is well pace and intriguing. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but they should replace all reality shows with something this gritty. Read more Review posted on Thursday, September 26th 2013 at 3:23 am |
