A Superman movie marathon is disrupted when Penny asks the guys to sign for a package that may be delivered while she’s gone. But when the guys discover that the package is huge, they understand it’s going to take some hard work to get it up all the stairs. When they finally do so and manage to get into Penny’s apartment with the spare key she gave Leonard, Sheldon is shocked about how messy her apartment is, and decides to clean it during the night while Penny is sleeping. However, when Penny wakes up, she is furious that they were in her apartment and Leonard is sad while she is angry at them.

Episode Notes

Rating: 8.58 million

This episode reveals that Howard can use flawless Russian in order to tell a woman how beautiful she is.

This episode marks the first time in the series when there were no guest stars.

The title ("The Big Bran Hypothesis") refers to Sheldon switching his type of cereal from low-fiber to high-fiber after hearing Penny scream in rage.

Though it seems quite convincing with the cereal box, "Honey Puffs" (a low-fiber cereal Sheldon eats only occasionally) is not a real product. Neither is "Big Bran", but it's easier to understand that this one is fake due to it's irregular name for a cereal.

Episode Quotes

Howard: Haven't you ever been told how beautiful you are in flawless Russian?
Penny: No, I haven't.
Howard: Get used to it.
Penny: Yeah... I probably won't.

(Leonard and Sheldon are faced with the task of moving a large heavy box up the stairs to Penny's apartment.)
Leonard: I guess we'll just bring it up ourselves.
Sheldon: I hardly think so!
Leonard: Why not?
Sheldon: Well, we don't have a dolly, or lifting belts, or any measurable upper-body strength.

Sheldon: Oh, gravity, thou art a heartless bitch."

Sheldon: (to himself) I have a Master's and two PhDs, I should not have to do this.
Penny: (entering) What?
Sheldon: I'm truly sorry for what happened last night. I take full responsibility. I hope that it won't color your opinion of Leonard, who is not only a wonderful guy, but also I hear a gentle and thorough lover.

Cultural References

Visual: Leonard walks through his darkened apartment, wielding a battery-powered light saber.

The light saber is a replica of (and a reference to) the famous weapon used in the "Star Wars" movies.

Leonard: Here you go. Pad Thai, no peanuts.

Leonard is referring to one of Thailand's national dishes, called "Pad Thai" or "Phat Thai", which is a dish of stir-fried rice noodles with eggs, fish sauce, tamarind juice, red chili pepper, with crushed peanuts (although Howard's dish is without), coriander and lime. A combination of bean sprouts, shrimp, chicken or tofu can also be used.

Visual: Sheldon is wearing a sweater with an image of the logo used for Superman.

Superman is a fictional comic book superhero in the DC Comics. The character is world-wide known for being an American cultural icon, and the character was first created in 1932. Superman is also widely famous for all his superhuman powers; super-strength, speed, stamina, durability, senses, intelligence, regeneration, super-breath, heat vision, x-ray vision and flight.

Sheldon: They all involve a Green Lantern and a power ring.

Green Lantern is the name of several fictional superheroes in the DC Comics. The character is famously known for possessing a power ring that gives him superhuman powers. With the ring on, the Green Lanterns get control of the world and together, they form what is called "Green Lantern Corps", which is a police force.

Visual: The guys argue about how Superman flies through the air.

Superman is a fictional comic book superhero in the DC Comics. The character is world-wide known for being an American cultural icon, and the character was first created in 1932. Sheldon: The Mandelbrot set of complex numbers is a little messy.

The Mandelbrot set, named after Benoît Mandelbrot, is a set of points in a complex plane, the boundary of which forms a fractal. If you need more information, then please check out the Wikipedia article.

Visual: A box of Frosted Mini-Bites on top of Leonard and Sheldon's refrigerator.

This cereal is most likely a parody of "Frosted Mini-Wheats". The picture on the refrigerator seems like an exact match (though it's hard to see it clearly). "Frosted Mini-Wheats" is manufactured by Kellogg's and it mainly consists of shredded wheat cereal pieces and frosting. The cereal came on the market in the 1980s, but disappeared from the shop shelves. It came back a few years later, but with a new brand ("Frosted Wheats" brand) and it got more success this time.
