Wow. What an amazing pilot episode.
What I most liked about it was how fast paced it was. It needed to be so it could introduce all the characters. By the time the credits began to roll I was well familiar with the main cast, including the mysterious water creatures. Although you never get a clear image of what they looked liked, which is why I'm so tempted to watch another episode, the point that these things are brilliant is well provided.
I've seen my fair share of poor pilot episodes and many could learn a thing or two from this masterpiece. The hardest part for a new series is to capture and maintain a constant audience. This episode does everything it can to do that. You really get to know the people that the story is centered around through interactions with their family and friends.
At this point in time I know Surface was canceled after one season, which meant it wasn't able to sustain that large enough amount of viewers. But that's the great thing about DVDs. I can watch the series in its entirety and without interruption, making the experience that much more wholesome.
I'm putting aside what I know about Surface's 'failure' and enjoying it truly for the first time.
