Episode Notes

In this episode, we discover that Baal has been hiding out in Earth ever since "Reckoning, pt. 2," when all the Jaffa realised that he and the other Goa'uld were not gods, and he has created an unknown number of clones of himself so that no one would know who the real Baal is.

Episode Quotes

Baal: Over six hundred channels and nothing to watch.

Mitchell: And I’m guessing those Jaffa aren’t exactly kicking it back at the local Denny’s. Plus, isn’t it a long stinky ride from Dakara in a cargo ship?
Teal’c: (smiling) Indeed.

Mitchell: So?
Daniel: That office was a war zone: staff weapons versus semi-automatics.
Mitchell: Who won?

Daniel: (to General Landry) Now, all the individuals we managed to identify so far are major players in the areas of business and high finance - very powerful, very influential and, in the case of these two, very missing.

Daniel: (referring to a dead Jaffa) He was discovered this morning at a remote road off Interstate 77 in Virginia. He was spotted by a passing motorist. the local authorities say he’s been dead about a day or so. Probably the victim of a hit-and-run driver.
Mitchell: So what do we figure, this guy got lost and he was hitching a ride back to Chulak?

General Landry: Colonel, did you find the bomb?
Sam: Sort of.
General Landry: What’s that supposed to mean?
Sam: Readings indicate that the entire superstructure of the building is laced with naquada. It was built that way. Baal’s been planning this for a long time.
General Landry: I’m not sure I understand, Colonel.
Sam: The bomb isn’t in the building, sir. The bomb is the building.

Mitchell: Witnesses?
Daniel: One. Some guy who was working overtime and spent most of the firefight under his desk, but was able to provide the descriptions of three individuals; big, tattooed, chain mill pants.
Mitchell: So it’s either our Jaffa or Kiss is back on tour.

Agent Barrett: How’s Pete?
Sam: We broke up.
Agent Barrett: Really? Uh, I mean I’m sorry to hear that.
Sam: Oh, it was the best thing for both of us.
Agent Barrett: So you’re single again.
Sam: Not exactly.

Agent Barrett: How have you been?
Sam: Pretty good. You?
Agent Barrett: Yeah, pretty good, can’t complain. What’s new?
Sam: Uh, let’s see... I was leading R & D for a while there.
Agent Barrett: Well, I never figured you the type to settle for a desk job.
Sam: I needed something with more flexible hours. Janet’s adopted daughter Cassie was going through a hard time.
Agent Barrett: Oh, I see.
Sam: Spent some time on the Prometheus away on deep-space reconnaissance.
Agent Barrett: Uh, huh.
Sam: Oh, helped stop a dangerous new enemy from getting a foothold in the galaxy.
Agent Barrett: Yes. I heard about that.

Cultural References

Deus Ex Machina

This is Latin, translated into English, it is "god from the machine". The phrase deus ex machina has been extended to refer to any resolution to a story which does not pay due regard to the story's internal logic and is so unlikely it challenges suspension of disbelief; allowing the author to conclude the story with an unlikely, but more palatable ending. It is also something of a play on words, since one could take the modified title "Ex Deus Machina" to refer to the "machinations" of a former god ("ex deus").
