Tuvok’s recent unexplained bout of flashbacks appears to coincide with Voyager’s passing of a nearby nebula rich in sirillium. Unfortunatley, flashbacks are known to destroy brain tissue in Vulcans, leading to death. While there is nothing the doctor can do, a mind meld can help Tuvok to find where the flashback is coming from and stop it. Janeway agrees to help Tuvok, and their meld takes them back in time 80 years when Tuvok had served aboard the USS Excelsior, then being captained by Hikaru Sulu.

As of this episode, Michael Ansara (Kang) has played the same character in three different "Star Trek" series. The only other actors to do so are Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker), Marina Sirtis (Counsellor Deanna Troi), Armin Shimerman (Quark), John de Lancie (Q) and Richard Poe (Gul Evek). | As of 2006, this is the final appearance of a Star Trek: The Original Series regular cast member on any subesequent Star Trek series. | This episode marks the departure of Michael Piller from the series as Executive Producer. Having co-created Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with Rick Berman, Piller left the latter series after the season three episode "Improbable Cause" to work full-time on Star Trek: Voyager. He would continue to serve on Voyager as a Creative Consultant. | This episode marks the departure of Michael Piller from the series as Executive Producer.
