Doomsday - season finale - AntiClimax might be better
!!!!!! This review contains spoilers !!!!!!

Anticlimax: Don't bring out the Beast unless he's ready for a good show

Like an overexcited kid I sat to watch this final episode. The lights had been dimmed, TV screen wiped clean, and distractions from either the door bell or telephone prevented. I really, really wanted for this episode to be the best ever. And to be fair the introduction was so impressive that when the gruff voice-over announcer said "... And now to the Season Finale" I was standing up on the couch in anticipation. I soon sat down.

The script writers probably wanted this episode split into two parts. They probably wanted to know if Tom Welling would be coming back in the recently confirmed Season 9 (he is). They probably wanted more time to work their magic. They probably wanted a well earned rest. Clearly they didn't get it their way and we have ended up with one of the worst episodes in the series. Lex Luther must be turning in his grave. The editing tries to compensate for a discontinuous story line that fails in its attempt to bring the current story to some conclusion while leaving us a Zoid hungry for more, in fact it just leaves us bored. The potential for greatness is enourmous. We have the epic battle between good and evil promised ever since we went cave crawling. If this wasn't enough for a great story we also have a potential disbanding of the Justice League, tardy visitors from the future and the struggle to bring sense to our AWOL Chloe. The abundance of material might have been too much for the script writers and the result lacks fun, fantasy and flair. Instead, we are shown set pieces and yet another Jimmy death (but he's is not who we thought so at least thats a nice surprise). The editing is also clunky and one cant help but think that it was done in a rush. Perhaps the lush special effects took longer than expected. Yes, there are better than ever effects on display, but even these fail to deliver a spectacular finale.

This is of course not the last time that a season finale was a krypton infected damp squid (season 6 anyone). Smallville set a ballistic standard - and high expectations - when the show premiered in 2001. The bar has dropped on this last episode. Yes, we say "Goodbye KC", but we can't help at the same time thinking "don't comeback unless you can pull your act together".

If this was to be the very last episode of Smallville, after a magnificent 8 years, then I'd be much more disappointed. In the knowledge that this isn't the last or the best, you can at least sit back and enjoy the FX eye candy. In the meantime, I'll get the sofa cushions fluffed up in time for season 9.
