Episode Recap

Clark arrives at his desk at the Daily Planet</i. for his first day of work. He's still wearing flannel and Lois grabs a co-workers shirt and tells Clark to put it on in a phone booth. He comes out and even she has to admit he looks impressive. However, an explosion rocks the building and Clark superspeeds off to investigate. On the street in front of the building, a bus has exploded. Clark brushes past a boy fleeing the scene and helps out as best he can while concealing his powers, and carries one unconscious woman out of the bus: Tess Mercer.

Chloe arrives and spots a young girl with a scalp wound staggering away from the site. She calls over an EMT who helps treat the girl with Chloe's assistance. The girl, Bette, stabilizes, and the EMT introduces himself as Davis Bloome and thanks Chloe for her help. Clark, distracted by helping others, loses track of Tess and still doesn't know who she is. He does find Chloe and suggest she can come back to the Planet
now that Lex is gone. She says that she'd rather try something new and starts to tell him about her engagement to Jimmy. However, Lois texts Clark to find out where he is. Clark heads back to the office and Lois is already chasing down the story. They're interrupted when Tess' aide comes down to call Clark up to the boss' office. Lois is less than thrilled.

Clark meets with Tess and realizes she's the woman from the bus. When he wonders why she was on the bus, she clams that she was just going green. She notes that Lex used to talk all about Clark and wonders if Clark has any information on where Lex might have gone. Clark doesn't know anything and Tess thanks him for saving her life. As he leaves, Clark says that he'd hate to see her get swallowed up b the job. After he goes, Tess calls in her assistant and says that Clark is hiding something and she's going to keep a close eye on him.

Chloe goes to see Bette at the hospital and brings some food. Bette is initially suspicious of her, particularly when Chloe asks about her parents. Bette eventually admits she's living on the streets. Chloe goes to get her a soda and bumps into Davis. She brings him up to speed on Bette's status and he offers to get the girl into a halfway home. Bette refuses until Chloe offers her apartment and promises there's no strings attached. Bette agree to think about Davis' offer.

Lois and Clark go to the website and Lois acts jealous of Tess paying attention to Clark despite his lowly status. She tries to talk her way past a policeman without success while Clark uses his superhearing to listen in on two CSI techs confirming that despite the explosion there's no trace of an explosive device. He superspeeds to Smallville and Chloe's apartment and discusses the situation with Chloe. He figures it's someone with meteor powers and Bette overhears them talking. She suggests that her boyfriend Tommy is responsible, that he found a meteor rock and now has some kind of power that flares up when he gets angry. Clark convinces her to drive to Metropolis with him and they track down Tommy. He tries to get away but runs into a dead-end alley. Clark tries to calm him down, unaware that Bette is focusing her power on some nearby gas cans. They explode, killing Tommy.

Clark tells Lois what happened and she records his story. However, she won't run the story without scientific evidence and suggests they sneak into the hospital to get Tommy's autopsy report. She promises to get Clark a job doing the obit and he reluctantly tags along.

Davis visits Chloe at the Isis Foundation to drop off the halfway home application for Bette. They both feel attracted to each other but quickly back off. Davis figures the Isis Foundations deals with meteor-infected people and suggests that Chloe might try helping out personally. She isn't enthused about the idea, and then talks about how she Googled Davis and found out he was a foster child. He's intrigued but she quickly explains that she's engaged and shows him her ring. Davis notes he's never had real love and she should stay with anyone who can give it to her.

Tess is in Lex's study reading up on Bette when a male aide comes in to report they haven't found the girl yet. He complains about how Tess is using an indirect approach, going after Bette on the bus, and Lex would have terminated the girl. Tess tells him to do it her way and bring Bette to her.

Lois and Clark get into the hospital and Lois sneaks into the records room. Clark loiters in the hallway and runs into Davis. At first Davis thinks Clark is Chloe's fiancé and Clark quickly disabuses him of the notion. Davis asks him not to reveal that he gave away Chloe's secret.

At the Talon, Bette is packing to leave when Chloe arrives and tries to stop her. Chloe insists and Bette uses her power to shatter a glass.

Lois gets the autopsy report, which proves that the re was no meteor rock in Tommy's system, and that he had a long criminal record but no experience with explosives. Going by the blast patterns they figure that Bette was responsible. Clark quickly slips away and heads for Metropolis.

At the Talon, Bette explains to Chloe that she has the power to create explosions and used them to protect herself on the bus when some corporation type came after her. She was locked up at Black Creek for several years until a week ago when she and the other prisoners were released. Tommy sold her out to the corporation and killed him to protect herself. Chloe sympathizes but warns that they don't kill. Bette prepares to kill Chloe to protect her secret, and Chloe runs downstairs. Bette throws a bomb blast at her, but Clark arrives just in time to deflect it. He then reaches out and asks Bette to trust him, insisting that she's no monster.

Bette is taken to Belle Reve for treatment and Chloe wonders if she let the girl down, and if things had been different if she had met Bette before the girl was imprisoned. Clark returns Chloe's ring, which she dropped in the struggle, and asks why she didn't say anything. Chloe admits that she's worried that her engagement and marriage will change things between them. But Clark assures her that her happiness is what matters.

Tess has the truck containing Bette detoured and meets with the girl. She offers Bette an alternative and explains that she had Bette released from Black Creek once she assumed control of LutherCorp. Now she plans to assemble a team of people with powers, and wants Bette to join.

At the Planet, Lois shows Clark her front-page story and thanks him for his help. She's suspicious of his sudden disappearance at the hospital but he distracts her by turning the subject to Chloe. Lois finds it weird that Chloe is getting married, then says she's glad that she actually wrote a real story that helped someone.

Chloe calls Davis but gets his answering machine. She leaves a message thanking him for helping her to decide that she should use the Isis Foundation to help people with powers. As she hangs up, she's unaware that a naked Davis is lying in a Metropolis alleyway, his body convulsing and swelling beneath the skin.
