Gladys the DMV Demon, played by [unknown person]
Gladys is a demon who works on Earth at the local DMV: essentially a portal to Hell, just as everyone figured. Apparently her job is simply to make mortals miserable, and she's good at her job: the lines are always long. Now that Sam is the new Reaper, she collects the vessels from him and delivers them to Hell.
Outside of her job, Gladys seems to live a normal "human" life. She has a small home with middle-aged lady kitsch, a greenhouse in the back where she grows roses, and a collection of angel figurines. She's reviled by the neighbors, who consider her the weird old woman of the neighborhood, and the local kids relentlessly trash her place. She doesn't appear happy about her life as an outcast, but there's not much she can do.
Later, Hell soul Mike Volta will use Gladys' loneliness to offer her romance in return for her help staying out of Hell. However, he betrays her as necessary and she's clearly not happy at the betrayal. Her action temporarily get her reassigned to Hell proper, and it's only Sam's intervention that gets her back to Earth.
Gladys does appear to enjoy the relative excitement that Sam and his friends bring to the area now that they're hunting escaped souls. She admits in a projected dream to Sock that she likes them coming around: whether that's true or not isn't entirely clear. Still, she does seem to have a wicked smile for them when they show up. However, that just may be because she's found a new way to mess up their mission in one of the Devil's many games.
Gladys has a pair of horns but despite the fact they're often quite obvious, no one except Sam and his friends seem to notice. Possibly they are only visible to those she wants to see them. She also has the ability to project dreams and nightmares into sleeping human minds. Given that she's a demon, nightmares are her typical tool of the trade. |
