Sam Oliver, played by Bret Harrison
Sam Oliver has always been a slacker with no direction in life and no responsibility. When he turns 21, he finds out that his parents sold his soul to the Devil before he was born. Now it's up to Sam to take care of the Devil's dirty work and capture demons that have escaped from Hell. |

Bert "Sock" Wysocki, played by Tyler Labine
Bert “Sock” Wysocki is a slacker, and proud of it. He has no ambition, no life goals, no driving desire to succeed in life. As long as he can drink, play video games, dance, hit on hot chicks, and hang out with his friends, he’s happy. He only works at the Work Bench because it gives him enough money to pay for doing what he likes to do. Sock isn’t interested in being the best employee, and holds the record for winning the “Dog of the Month” award (until Sam managed to take it away from him through sheer underperformance).
If there’s one thing Sock values, it’s his friends. When Sam has faltered in his quest to collect escaped souls, Sock has always been there driving him on. When Sam needs a hand, Sock is there. Maybe Sock has found a life’s goal after all...
Sock does have an instinctive talent for MacGyver-ing: taking items from around the Work Bench and make them into something useful for soul hunting. He’s also a bottomless well of pop culture knowledge, including horror movies, although this often serves to confuse the situation when he gets something wrong or the real-life supernatural stuff they meet doesn’t match up with his expectations.
Also, despite himself, Sock is getting sucked into the unseen world of the supernatural. After deciding to obsess on Gladys the DMV demon, he actually did some research on the subject. An outcast of sorts himself due to an early growth-spurt, he can sympathize with the demons who were kicked out of Heaven after losing their battle for supremacy. However, Gladys sending him a sexual dream seems to have convinced him to give her a wide berth. For now.

The Devil, played by Ray Wise
Yes, the Devil. Beelzebub. His Infernal Majesty. The Prince of Darkness. The top dog. The big chief. Lucifer, the Morningstar, who rebelled against God and paid the price.
The Devil is always impeccably dressed, well coiffed, tanned, and with a cheery smile ready for anyone he meets. He has no (apparent) horns, tail, or pitchfork, and can and does pass as a normal human being.
The Devil is amiable enough, as long as things are going his way and no one tries to cross him. He knows that he’s going to lose eventually, but appears intent on having fun and carrying out his part of the Divine plan in the meantime. He appears to have embraced Sam as a kind of son or younger brother and is intent on making sure Sam gets what the Devil thinks he deserves. Thsi may be particularly ironic since it's possible Sam may be his blood son.
f course, being Evil, the Devil has to also corrupt Sam regardless of their true relationship and make things generally miserable for Sam. He just can’t help it: he’s evil. Look it up. Still he seems to have Sam’s best interests at heart. Either that, or Sam’s interests will lead him straight into Hell and the Devil is eager to get him on the way. The jury’s still out.
The whole “evil” thing also means that the Devil has a short temper, and won’t tolerate anyone who interferes in his plans. He’s witnessed the evil of Mankind for millennia as the souls come into Hell and has little faith in the human animal. He believes that humans are jaded cynics that will do whatever it is to get them what they want and don’t care for anyone else. Sam may be a bright spot in his “life,” since so far the young man has resisted the Devil’s attempts to corrupt him. If nothing else, Sam represents a challenge, and the Devil has few of those in the 21st century.
Despite his disdain for humanity, the Devil does maintain romantic relationships with several women, including actress Mariska Hargitay (they went to the 2007 Emmys together), and Mimi Hansen. He has admitted that he was betrayed once by his only true love: God. Meanwhile, he tends to abuse the women mentally and attempt to corrupt them.
What really drives the Devil is ennui. He’s been running Hell for millennia and challenges are few and far between. The one holiday of the year he could call his own has been turned into a celebration to parody and mock him. Mankind doesn’t seem to need his “help”: they fully embrace evil on their own. He’s surrounded by incompetent demons and vile human souls: who wouldn’t be depressed? The Devil is often reduced to playing minor pranks like shoving a shopping cart into a passing car or jumping out at someone in the dark. Now that he has a new Reaper, the Devil plans to make the most of the situation and has any number of games he wants to play.
As the Prince of Darkness, the Devil can do pretty much anything he wants to on the mortal plane or in Hell and is essentially omniscient. He is limited to only being able to appear in corners, and an inability to see within circles. He can be destroyed by the Sword of the Archangel Michael, but only he knows where it is. The only other restraints on him are either self-imposed, or whatever limits are placed on him by God. Apparently he can kill someone simply by snapping his fingers, but considers such trivial efforts gauche. Typically he contents himself with teleporting himself or Sam. |

Ben, played by Rick Gonzalez (1)
Ben (no last name currently known) comes from a good Hispanic family. The scholarly one of the family with an interest in the theological, his parents and grandmother figured he would become a priest. However, things never turn out like you’d like and Ben ended up as a worker at a retail outlet. He enjoyed thinking about the spiritual and the supernatural, but it just seemed boring.
Until he discovered that his friend Sam was a Reaper for Hell. Finally Ben has a chance to put all of that theological knowledge to use, and he likes to think of himself as Sam’s spiritual advisor. He also sees himself as doing holy work, and he finally succeeded in pleasing his grandmother when she found out what he was involved in.
Ben possesses no special skills but does have a good working knowledge of the Bible. Due to allergies he can’t keep any pets, so he’s interested in any animals they come across. He acts as Sam’s friend, giving him support when he needs it even if he does tend to end up the target of every escaped soul’s attack. But he’s always willing to come back for more.
If Ben has one flaw, it's his gentle trusting nature. When fellow Work bench co-worker Sara asks him to marry her so she can get a green card, he lets himself get suckered in despite her poor treatment of him, and her refusal to let him see his new girlfriend Cassidy on the side. Sara eventually betrays him, stealing $2,000 and going on the lam and leaving Ben to go to jail for his part in the immigration scam. |
