In the first season, Shawn and Gus open their psychic detective agency and begin their work. Besides taking their own cases, they also sometimes work for the Santa Barbara Police Department. We see how Shawn's craziness is balanced by his best friend Gus. We are also introduced to the angst between Shawn and his father, Henry. Shawn still blames his father for breaking their family apart by leaving his mother when Shawn was a teenager. At the police department, Shawn has to deal with Lassiter, the head detective, and his partner Juliet, whom Shawn has a flirty relationship with. In order to solve their cases, Shawn and Gus find themselves impersonating a spellmaster at the spelling bee, workers at the planetarium, and legal consultants for a woman accused of murder.
