Psych, up to this point, has not had the greatest season. Murder?...Murder?...Anyone...?...Bueller? and The Greatest Adventure in the History of Basic Cable were the only two episodes that really stood out as being good. The rest, sad to say, were mostly lackluster. Thankfully though, for the mid-season finale, long-time fans will be very glad to see that for this episode, the show is no less than back at the top of its game.
Gus Walks into a Bank hits all the right notes in all the right places. The episode can effectively and quickly change tone from funny to suspenseful. James Roday plays Shawn gracefully and easily, as Shawn goes from worried best friend to hostage negotiator and back to worried best friend again, keeping all of his signature charisma and charm. Maggie Lawson plays off of him perfectly concerning Shawn and Juliet's storyline in this episode. Timothy Omundson brings Lassiter into a bit of new territory, as instead of being annoyed with Shawn in this episode, he actually works with him. Considering it's been two-and-a-half years, I'd say it's about time. Sadly, Dulé Hill, Corbin Bernsen, and Kirsten Nelson are slightly underutilized.
The plot, although it has a few holes, delivers, giving us both a solid mystery and a sense of suspense that resonates throughout the entire episode. The score is as wonderful as always, and each moment is always scored appropriately. The writing is much better than it has been for the season so far, with the jokes much better than usual. And come on. Who didn't love the hug?
Ultimately, Gus Walks into a Bank is exactly what Psych fans were hoping for. Although we've had a rather boring season, this installment ends at least the mid-season on a high note. If the series can keep churning out episodes like this, even just once every four episodes, as has been the case this season, I'll be OK with it. After all, they can't all be winners. But without a doubt, this episode most definitely is. So... who else will have a hard time waiting until January?
Final Score: 9/10.
