| Season 3 picks up three months after the end of season 2. Dan sets out to find out who tried to murder him, accusing person after person before coming across evidence that Keith may have done it. After finding evidence that points to Keith, Dan holds a grudge against him that lasts the entire season. Brooke returns from her summer in California and refuses to date Lucas exclusively, but Lucas tries to convince her to do otherwise. Nathan returns from High Flyers, but isn't able to trust Haley. Before summer ends and school starts back up, Nathan decides to divorce Haley, but they have to be separated for one year before they can do so. During the course of their separation year, Haley tries as hard as she can to get Nathan to trust her again in order to get them back to the way they were. Nathan hires Chris Keller to work again with Haley, and Chris' help ultimately gets Nathan to forgive Haley. The two begin to work their marital problems out and ultimately renew their vows in a fairytale wedding ceremony.
Peyton searches for the truth behind her birth mother throughout the course of the season, but has trouble trusting Ellie after Ellie lies about who she is and about the cancer she had been diagnosed with. The two are able to form a mother-daughter relationship, but just as they begin to bond over a charity album they make together, Ellie succumbs to her terminal cancer, devastating Peyton.
Lucas and Brooke have their ups and downs as well. Brooke refuses to date Lucas exclusively, but Lucas refuses to be non-exclusive with Brooke. As they become closer, Brooke tears their relationship apart by sleeping with Chris Keller. However, they are able to work things out but their relationship is once again tried when Lucas and Peyton's feelings for each other resurface.
The Ravens take the court for Whitey's final season as coach. After a shaky start to the season, the Ravens are able to make the playoffs. But the team suffers a large loss when Lucas quits the team due to his heart condition, forcing Nathan to single-handedly carry the team without Lucas' help.
Dan and Deb continue to have a rocky relationship. Dan decides to run for Mayor and forces Deb to stay with him until after the election. Dan runs unopposed until Karen decides to run against him. Despite a good campaign, Dan is elected mayor of Tree Hill.
Season 3 is marked by tragedy when a student, Jimmy Edwards, brings a gun to school and holds students hostage in the Tutor Center. Lucas and Nathan run back into the building to save their loved ones. Lucas is able to save Peyton's life after she was shot in the leg and Nathan ends up one of the students held hostage. Keith tries to talk Jimmy out of doing something tragic, but as Keith talks to him, Jimmy takes his own life. As Keith keeled by Jimmy, Dan takes Jimmy's gun, shoots Keith, and then frames Jimmy for Keith's murder.
Karen takes Keith's death hard, as does Lucas. Mouth is shocked to learn that Tree Hill newcomer, Rachel Gatina, released the time capsule that fueled Jimmy's rampage.
As the season came to a close, Nathan and Haley renewed their vows, and Karen revealed to Dan and Lucas that she was pregnant with Keith's child. But Rachel was once again the cause of tragedy when she causes Nathan's uncle Cooper to drive off of the bridge as he swerves to avoid Nathan and Haley's car. Nathan dives into the water to save Cooper and Rachel, despite Haley urging him not to, but finds himself trapped in the limo, quickly running out of air. | |
